Day 2 – Fire Quest and Bronze II

Not So Fast…

I was so eager to login and check what my daily quest was going to be and there it was: the Fire Quest!
As I did on Day-1, I began getting familiar with my Fire splinters by playing a few Practice battles, and with pretty poor results. For some reason, I could not get the hang of this Fire deck and my tank of choice, the Living Lava, seemed to die too fast for the rest of my team to land enough good hits, even with the help of Malric Inferno as a Summoner (his ability gives +1 Melee attack to friendly Monsters).

Making Progress

A few more tries later, it seemed that I was getting good results by using this formation (21 Mana):

  • Marlic Inferno
  • Living Lava (has Shield, so takes reduced damage from Melee and Ranged)
  • Magma Troll (his Reach ability allows him to attack from the second position)
  • Serpentine Spy (Opportunity allows him to attack from any position)
  • Spark Pixies (I wanted a Ranged attacker)

This formation allowed me to benefit from the +1 attack for all cards except Spark Pixies, not too shabby! 😉
In battles with lower Mana cap I would sacrifice my Spark Pixies and for higher caps I would throw in another Ranged from the Neutral splinter, such as Mantoid (6 Mana) or Goblin Chariot (5 Mana).
All of the aforementioned cards are from the starting deck, so definitely good alternatives for playing on a budget. A few battles in, and my Earth quest was cleared!

Experiments

As I was poking around the market, I decided to try a couple new cards and my choice went for these two guys:

  • Goblin Shaman (his Weaken ability reduces all enemy’s health by 1), Alpha Gold version
  • Molten Ogre (figured I’d try a “tankier” tank than Living Lava), Promo version

Renting these two for a day set me back just 7 DEC (much cheaper if you get the standard versions), which I figured I could make back pretty quickly with the reward bonuses.
In the end though, I had a very hard time fitting Molten Ogre in my formation, since the whopping amount of Mana (9) required to play him doesn’t really work in your average battle, where the Mana cap is around 15-17.
Goblin Shaman also left me somewhat disappointed, it seemed to me that his special ability was not worth enough to give up 3 Mana instead of allocating them for a stronger attacker.

Level Up!

I got promoted into Bronze II…whoo-hoo!

Well, my stats are not really stellar, but making progress is definitely cool.

Between clearing the daily quest and reaching Bronze II, I ended my Day-2 with the following rewards:

  • 65 DEC
  • 7 Treasure Chests
  • 1 Chain Spinner card (awesome art of this one, by the way…)

That’s a Wrap!

Takeaways from Day-2:

  1. Be careful when acquiring cards with high Mana requirements: they might have better stats, but you’ll be using them less frequently
  2. Unless you invest in a better Summoner, playing the Fire splinter with Marlic Inferno makes it harder to adjust your formation depending on the Mana cap, since to take advantage of his boost you need to be Melee heavy
  3. Speed is key! That’s a stat that I had underestimated, but good tanks and good attackers won’t save you if your team averages 1-2 speed.

THANK YOU for reading this far, hope someone out there could benefit from me sharing my experience!
