Quick Facts
- Free and open-source software (FOSS)
- Based off of Tron a 1982 Sci-Fi movie.
- Up to 4 players per computer (Split-Screen)
- Many more players over a LAN (server defined maximum)
- Often considered a racing game because it doesn't fit well into standard categories, but a good short description is that it is like a multiplayer "snake"
- The game has been in development since 2000 according to Wikipedia, but in recent years, development has slowed down.
Pros
- The fact that it's free means you don't need to pay anything to test it out, or use it for your LAN parties!
- The fact that it's open source means that it can never really die.
- The game has an easy learning curve.
- Multiple players per PC can be helpful in scenarios where there aren't enough computers to go around.
- Custom dedicated server allows you to customize many aspects of the game.
- Cross platform support allows play between Windows, Linux and Macintosh computers.
- Portable version available at PortableApps.com. So you don't have to install it to play.
Cons
- Default settings can be confusing, and there's no tutorial.
- Development hasn't been very active lately, so the game is starting to age a bit.
- Default settings, without a custom dedicated server will get repetitive fairly quickly.
- No music. Just sounds.
What I personally like about it.
- Because it's so simple to learn to play, it makes a good LAN party game, even when most people there haven't played it, and even without setting up a dedicated server.
- If you do want to use a dedicated server, only one person would need to learn to set it up. The others can just connect and play.
- It can actually run on the raspberry pi! (Though it's much better on a full fledged PC)
- It can support tons of players on very, very large maps, the default map is just a cube, but there are other shapes and configurations available.
- You can even set the number of degrees to turn at a time. (instead of turning at 90° right angles)
It's free to try, and very fun. Link here!
It gets my LAN tag because it works really well as a LAN party game.
Comment if you've played it!
