Say what you will about the Grand Theft Auto series, but it’s highly successful. There is no question that it is. For as controversial as it may be it’s a very popular, well selling series. So it’s no surprise that one of them can, and should, be put in the running for most successful game of all time. And I think that Grand Theft Auto V very much fits that bill. Why? Well when it comes to successful games it’s really all about the bottom line; the cash earned. After all, isn’t that the main point of making a game? To earn cash for your efforts? When it comes to that Grand Theft Auto V very much has a strong run for the Championship here, so to speak. Let’s take a deeper look at the game and why I feel that way.
Grand Theft Auto V: Most successful game ever?
When it comes to launch Grand Theft Auto V is King. It made 1 billion in earnings in just 3 days. That’s faster than any other video game that has ever existed. Faster than any film. It gained that much money in quicker time than any other entertainment media in any form. That, at the very lest, keeps it in the running for the most successful video game ever released. That’s not just a gaming record it set, it was a full entertainment record. That’s simply amazing. The game has also, as of 2017, sold over 80 million units. That includes copies shipped to merchants as well as in home, but by far more of those are in homes as opposed to being in a store.
And don’t forget Grand Theft Auto V’s Online mode!
Those are sales for the base game, mostly the disc versions but also including the digital downloads. As of less than a week ago SuperData (Analyst Firm) confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V’s online service, GTA Online, has earned over 1 billion dollars alone. Let’s pretend the game didn’t make any more than the 1 billion online and the 1 billion within the 3 days. Let’s just assume it has made 2 billion and it’ll never make a dime more. That would put the earnings of the game 4th place in all time earnings when stacked against the top earning films in movie history. Granted we know it made a lot more than just 2 billion but for arguments sake we’ll say it only made that. And that’s a massive number for a game.
Earnings galore!
There can be no denying that Grand Theft Auto V earned a crap-ton of money. I’d argue that it’s the most successful video game ever. Just look at the records it set. Look at the money earned (which is the whole point). It’s amazing the power of this game and it makes me curious if VI will be able to compete with what was done with this one. Time will tell but in the meantime we know this game is the, if not among the, most successful video game ever!
