Dishonored death of the outsider is the latest entry in the dishonored franchise, breaking off from the events in both the first and second game and developed by Arkane studios. It places you in the role of assassin billy lurk, a secondary character from the second game who was featured more heavily in the knife of dunwall dlc. This time she's on a mission to hunt down and assassinate the outsider hence the title.
THE GAME PLAY
With five missions spread across a few different environments, death of the outsider does a pretty good job of making its $30 price tag justified. But if you weren't a fan of dishonored 2 well I doubt this is gonna win you over. So whether or not you're a fan of the dishonored series I think objectively something that the games have always nailed in fact something most arcane studio games have nailed, is the sense of throwing you into this believable game world. You'll move through streets populated with citizens going about their business and you'll traverse alleyways and rooftops littered with trash and apartments with belongings strewn about in a believable fashion.
Seriously there's not a single attractive person in this game. Billy's journey is set across five missions as I said a few of which recycle the same errors but repopulate the area with enemies to keep the gameplay feeling unique. Each of these missions offers up side contracts to earn extra coin which is then spent on the expected black-market store to buy new items and upgrades.
What the outsider has also done is kind of streamline things a little bit to simplify the gameplay in a few key areas. They've done away with the heart for instance which means no more hunting around like an idiot searching for bone charms and runes.
You still collect charms but now instead you're simply alerted on screen when ones in your vicinity. Instead of Manning, you've now got void energy which recharges over time we're not used and the void powers themselves and our priests said without needing to be upgraded which removes the customization element but also the need for hunting down dozens of runes to upgrade them. It's a shame however that the new powers aren't all that amazing or even original. Blink makes a return in the form of displace which is the void power you're going to be using 99% of the time to avoid getting detected and just to traverse the area more easily.
Foresight allows you to stop time and fly around tagging enemies to reveal their positions and also see their line of sight. Semblance is a power that allows you to impersonate another NPC which sounds cool but there's only one instance when you have to use it for a side quest and otherwise I didn't really find it all that great. Even the void sword get later in the game is just too risky in melee weapon with a charged up attack that basically functions like the wind blast power did. So all in all, a pretty piss-poor lineup, I mean I'd love to have said they went for quality over quantity here but I'd be lying through my teeth.
Then there's the gameplay which is mostly unchanged from Dishonored 2 allowing the player to take a combat or a stealth approach to the gameplay then also offering up numerous lethal or non-lethal options. Death of the outsider offers up the expected lethal and non-lethal projectiles as well as mines and grenades which can either incapacitate your foes or outright murder them.
The game mods a sandbox and you’re free to go about getting the job done as you see fit but if you’re like me, you've always played these games trying to shed as little blood as possible and by completing missions being entirely discrete and if you're gonna take that approach, well it pains me to say this but you can expect to have a pretty rough time with it. Part of what I think makes the whole thing so frustrating is the game's reliance on the mechanic of trial and error and it's also part of why I dislike Dishonored 2 so much.
At any time you can quick save your progress and just as easily load that quick save whenever you mess up but it seems the game has a dependence on this as a means of getting through the game. For me, it's more of an emphasis on the error part than it is the trial, you know what I mean like you try this it doesn't work so you try that and it doesn't work etc so you reload and you try something else. Repeat this 20 times a mission, it's the ironic downside to having a game well with so many elements working at once it just means that there's so many more factors that can possibly go wrong.
I mean you expect a little bit of this in stealth games that's really par for the course but it's definitely more prevalent in the last couple Dishonored games and it's just simply not fun, not to mention it ruins the rhythm when you're staring at a loading screen yet again.
What also doesn't help is dishonours again criminally underdeveloped stealth system. The enemies in this game are super smart, their peripheral vision often feels like they've got eyes in the back of the head. They'll react to a noise you make in a third-floor apartment from the streets below and they become suspicious and alert all their nearby buddies and start searching at the area you're in looking under tables and checking corners.
How does the player get to combat all of this?
Well, you've got a Crouch button you crouch to enter stealth mode. What does stealth mode affect, well it beats me because they never fucking tell you and this is the same shit they pulled off in Dishonored 1 & 2 and I'll say it over and over until I lose my voice you can't just put a Crouch button in a game and think that count is including stealth mechanics for the player. How about some kind of noise matter, how about some kind of indication on the UI as to how visible I am to the enemy, and how about anything other than me just pressing the Crouch button and hoping for the best.
Don't try to tell me that death of the outsider is some kind of hardcore stealth game either because they give you a void power that literally stops time and lets you fly around and tag enemies in the area. Even when enemies attack, though it's not gonna diminish their arguably unrealistic senses and attunement to somehow always know where the player is. Thankfully, death of the outsider hasdone away with the chaos mechanics so now you can murder people as much as you want, something which much like the previous games is far easier and more fun than trying to sneak past anyone.
When you are detected, you're off and then fighting every guard in a ten-mile radius because they're all somehow omniscient and know exactly where you are. You think this would be an issue but it's actually pretty easy to dispatch groups of enemies with little dramas, it makes you wonder why you're wasting your time studying someone's patrol patterns avoiding everyone and quick loading every time you're spotted when you could just run right in the front door guns blazing from the get-go and achieved the same result.
What I've always liked about the Dishonored series is that it does make sure that if things go south you can usually either run away or stand your ground effectively.
I just wish the stealth was refined enough that I didn't have to and that it wouldn't go south as much in the first place.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND
Every nook and cranny of the game world has had an incredible amount of effort put into making it feel true to life or at least like it served a purpose in some way. And that's something that death of the outsider has done amazingly well, you just can't deny the amount of work that's gone into bringing this world to life and whilst it might not have a high level of environmental interactivity in the same vein as prey recently did it's still a fascinating game world. On a positive note it also runs a lot better than dishonored 2 did and it also carries across that distinctive art style which basically just seems to try to make every single character model as hideously ugly as possible.
Voiced by rosario Dawson Asim SIF, taking a break from popping up in every single Marvel TV show ever made she portrays unique protagonists for the series and that her motivations are pretty singular and not all that connected with the events of Emily and Culver from the other games.

Graphics 8/10 7.7\10 Arkane Studios Bethesda Softworks 15 September, 2017 Finally, in a shocking revelation that nobody saw coming, let me wrap up by saying the death of the outsider is really only worth playing if you’ve enjoyed this on the 2. As a watered-down version of that game, it offers up more or less the same experience just with a few minor tweaks here and there. Chances are everything you might have liked or disliked about Dishonored 2 is still gonna be present here and nothing's been done to improve the issues that it had outside of the performance. The new void powers and weapons aren't all that groundbreaking or even memorable, so if anything it's a less fun version of the other games. Billy as a character is likable enough, I guess her motives are always pretty clear, I mean she's not cool though or Emily but she's not trying to be. This story is just an appetizer in between what I hope will be the next Dishonored game an appetizer that might not be everyone's tastes. In terms of value death of the outsider is as long as you want to make it, if you play through all the missions and don't spend all that much time exploring the world you can probably finish it in around three or four hours. But if you spend the time soaking up everything the game offers it could be upwards of double that. At the end of the day chopping people's heads off blowing things up with grenades and teleporting across rooftops is still fun I just wish it was all a bit more refined.
