Hello my dear Steemates, I joined this great site week ago and I was thinking about something what would be interesting both for you and me, so I decided to start writing about the most favourite sport of me: Formula 1. I haven't seen a lot of posts with this theme and that's the reason why I would like to introduce it to you!
HISTORY OF CANADIAN GP
Canada has a long history in motorsport, especially in F1. On Sunday it is going to be 50 years since the first Grand Prix was hold there and Canada decided to celebrate this anniversary with a special collection of 5 stamps, each representing 1 decade of this race.
CIRCUIT GILLES VILENEUVE
Originally Île Notre-Dame Circuit was renamed in honour of 1979 runner-up in Drivers' Championship and extremely popular Canadian driver, Gilles Villeneuve, just few moths after his tragic death in 1982. This stop-go track located on an island in the middle of Saint Lawrence River demands heavy braking and speed on straights, what is promising, with combination of fast corners and a chicane, one of the most interesting races in the season. The most famous part of the circuit is "Wall of Champions," which ended the race of 3 World Champions- Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve (who is a son of Gilles Villeneuve) in 1999. On the picture you can see the famous barrier which bears the name Bienvenue au Québec ("Welcome to Quebec").
CRAZY RACES AND UNPREDICTABLE WINNERS
Usually fans don't even need mixed conditions for an amazing race. Several great drivers, like Jean Alesi, Robert Kubica and Daniel Ricciardo claimed their first victory in Montreal. Well, then we've got a category filled with crazy ones. In 2011 the race was won by Jenson Button, even when he was holding the last place during the race! Race affected by thunderstorm brought us one of the most exiting Zero to Hero stories of all time in F1 history.
