Love them or hate them, video games are here to stay.
More than a pastime they are a hobby for millions around the world and even e-sports are getting big.
From the very beginning of video games there have been myths about them, rumors and stories, but in more recent times video games have received more attention, by the general public and by the media, that have made it easier to spread all the myths and stories.
Let's talk about five of them, without any order of fame.
1- Video games lead to violence.
The media often try to associate video games with violence, as in either argument there are two sides.
But many psychologists come out in defense of video games, saying they serve as a way to alleviate violent tendencies in a virtual world, stating even that violence rates have come down with increased use of video games, a claim aided by studies.
2- Video games cause antisocial behavior.
There is no data to prove that video games cause antisocial behavior.
The image of someone who spends the day at home playing video games alone is a stereotype.
Most gamers nowadays play multiplayer online games, where they meet new people and make new friends with people from all over the world, participating in "Guilds" and "Parties".
Some of these online friends sometimes turn out to become real-life friendships.
3- Only male gamers play video games.
This is easy to refute.
Although there are quite a few male players, there are also many female players.
Yes, it is true that in many games, especially (MMORPG's) quite a few female avatars controlled by male players, and hence the myth that there are only male players in this type of games.
Having said all this, it's not all true, there are many female players playing both (MMORPG's) and other types of games.
Just go to video game streaming site, there are many female streamers playing the most varied games, they have a large number of viewers and followers.
4- "Blow" Me
As all players of the sega genesis era and SNES probably know, the cartridges did not always work the first time.
Sometimes you had to blow them. But was that really what made them work?
On the contrary, even the instruction manuals said not to do it, as it could damage the cartridges.
5- Lara Croft Naked
Was the year 1996 and was presented a star of the video games, Lara Croft, known by millions of players.
Shortly after the launch of the game began to run a rumor, a code super secret that would allow stripping the character completely naked.
The rumor spread quickly and hordes of players tried to use the code without success.
The 7 year old me always wondered why my dad played Tomb Raider so much.
