A trip back to 2002 in gaming history (Part 1)

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Apart from finding traces of water on Mars - 2002 seems to be a rather harsh year in our history, as you may have seen I usually start off a post with some fun facts about the year. Looking into 2002 - of course I came across some nice movie releases and all that, yet it seems to be highly saturated with trouble and hardship. So instead of the "ha-ha" I would like to share my hope that anyone who faces trouble, any kind of trouble would see a better day eventually.

Before I carry on with this I'd like to note that it'd be really cool if you reading this would share your thoughts and opinions on the games I highlighted below as I (and probably most other people) am not well familiar with all of them and might have totally missed the awesomeness of some or even generally missed to mention some cool games released that year.

Some other years I already covered, be sure to open them up in a new tab while reading this one.

Having that out of the way, let's move on!

  • Syberia

xVp7w-HZZEw.jpg

A graphic adventure (with a bit of a steampunk flavor) by a french studio "Microïds". The game is often praised for a very well written story, be sure to check it out if you haven't yet. Do you know any similar games in terms of design?

  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

ZsgrkP9carw.jpg

The third installment in the series and the first MOH game to be available for Windows. The game makes use of the famous Quake III engine with some modifications from Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.².
Worth to mention that this is the only game in the series to feature expansion packs.

  • Serious Sam: The Second Encounter

7UmgZCF2u7U.jpg

It's been less than a year since the first "Sam" game dropped and the new one was even able to do some things better... Which one would you see as a better game?

  • Disciples II: Dark Prophecy

E4OQY8jpoc8.jpg

A sequel to the 1999 Disciples: Sacred Lands. The game has gained far more recognition and was commercially far more successful than the original title.
A Nintendo DS port was under development, however eventually was never released.

  • Darkened Skye

SexJaDTfT4g.jpg

A third-person action game developed by Boston Animation, however the development was outsourced to Ukranian developers.

  • Command & Conquer: Renegade

w7CCUdF6Mcs.jpg

An FPS developed by Westwood Studios as a part of the C&C series. The only C&C game to adopt this concept. I remember being super stoked by the fact that you can actually live the whole C&C thing inside out - it's like taking over your imp's mind in a Dungeon Keeper game. Although I only got to play the game several years later, I think in 2005, when did you get to play it?

  • Army Men: RTS

JasSqx7aCWk.jpg

3DO's farewell to the series, yes, there were more released after this one, yet this is the last one 3DO released before going bankrupt. My favorite Army Men game to this day is "Army Men: Air Tactics" do you have one?

  • Global Operation

wmpjlkE3pCM.jpg

Have anything to share with us about this one?

  • Heroes of Might and Magic IV

ZQP-p0cICzk.jpg

The last HOMM game from New World Computing. I, as a die-hard HOMMIII fan probably cannot objectively say anything about this game, so I would encourage you to do so, have you got anything to say about HOMMIV?

  • Freedom Force

5ZFjUW2_g4k.jpg

A fun comic book styled RPG developed by the long deceased Irrational Games.

  • Might and Magic IX: Writ of Fate

eLjsH6RoceU.jpg

Same as HOMM - Might and Magic IX is the last game in the series to be developed by New World Computing. And the last one that I actually enjoyed. How do you like the newer installments and what is your favorite one if you have one?

  • Kingdom Hearts

AKtUn-Pyo3U.jpg

A hack and slash kind of RPG directed by Tetsuya Nomura - an interesting crossover of Dysney and Sqyare Enix characters. The series currently has multiple games and future titles are planned. Have you played any of those?

  • Dungeon Siege

7CMBwFK6DTI.jpg

An action RPG developed by Gas Powered Games as their debut title. Metacritic lists this game as the third highest rated game of 2002. I feel like this game deserves more to be told, I haven't had a lot of time with it so I'm hoping that you will be able to let us know something more.

  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

fSXQWwQNp2Y.jpg

Now this is the one you've probably been waiting for. Morrowind - the game that truly brought TES to the masses! A short description like this simply cannot fit anything even close to describe what a monumental game this was (and actually still is). If you know what it is, then you most probably know the story behind it by now, if you don't - then please go look it up, it's amazing!

  • Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project

F6-0sfOTomU.jpg

A surprisingly nice Duke Nukem side-scroller which had some legal issues due to it's name as it was already owned by another company - ARUSH.

  • Final Fantasy XI

snGXCOV8hok.jpg

The first online FF game in the series and the first MMORPG to offer cross-platform gaming between PS2 and PC gamers. As well as that it is the first XB360 MMORPG. So quite a lot of things to be first at. However I've never played this one myself, have you?

  • Cultures 2: The Gates of Asgard

cjvvWZR7vNU.jpg

  • Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

y1G6ILqghWY.jpg

Kept true to its ideas from the first installment, again, a really fun fast-paced multiplayer mode. And the screenhot captures the game's mood really well!

  • F1 2002

SWhmVDMobgM.jpg

  • Neverwinter Nights

k_eGZ4PT5m8.jpg

An RPG developed by BioWare set in the D&D world of Forgotten Realms. The game utilizes D&D 3rd edition game mechanics and is named after an original title, which was the first ever graphic MMORPG running from 1991 to 1997 on AOL. Did you get on the hype train of this game back in the day?

  • Delta Force: Task Force Dagger

Cj7Tb7eXbmE.jpg

A stand alone expansion pack to Delta Force: Land Warrior.

  • Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

QtWHzs5ObJA.jpg

This doesn't need an introduction - if it wasn't for WCIII you probably wouldn't have your DOTA2 and LOL and all sorts of other spin-offs. WCIII got over 6 different "game of the year" awards and numerous nominations.

That looks like a good line up to wrap up the first part of 2002, don't you think so? Do you have anything to add to the above? Being a huge TES fan I would surely note Morrowind from the list, what's your personal favorite there? And finally what would you recommend us to try if we haven't? Be absolutely sure to share your thoughts with us!

A HOMM fan, sweet! I still like 4, heh. 3 is definitely tops but 4 is still a favorite

Dungeon Siege kept me awake a whole night.
It was sooo addictive and the landscapes were that beautiful.
Just loved the game.

Thank you for reminding me on that. :-)

Ahhh.... warcraft 3. The last warcraft I ever played. Great game. I've still got the massive boxed collectors edition on the shelf. Hate that they went online MMORPG after that. I refuse to pickup those games.

Cool! Love thie series, sorry it took me a bit to come back . I don't know how I missed liek three comments from people haha. So i wrote that poem about gaming but i am actually also working on a really cool game, you should check it out and let me know what you think. We are in open beta right now but we wipe and full release on the 30th ! I wrote backstory and am doing in game story among other things :) https://laserchain.io/game

Somewhere might have medal of honour still. Was a good laugh back in the day.. Neverwinter nihts i got, but played 5 mins, due to others not wanting to help or join.. wasted cash on that sadly..

CnC Renegade looks tight would have liked to tried that. Duke had a sidescroller-- nice!

Pretty good content, but I would like you to practice more the appearance, use images of sides or separators. This would please the users a lot. I follow you and I vote you :)

Just followed your advise on the most recent post - wondering which way is it actually better, having sexy formatting or bigger pictures?
