In the late 90s the First Person Shooter (FPS) were undergoing a very important transition, due to the success of great games like DOOM, Quake or Goldeneye 64 (to name a few) many video game companies tried to shine in this great genre without However, many of them failed, even though a company that was almost bankrupt decided to risk everything to perform and show the gamer world something that for its time was innovative, Iguana Entertainment.

They had the excellent idea of creating a FPS with 3D graphics but with elements of jigsaw and platforms, thing that no game for the moment possessed these characteristics, this way they announced the great Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the great Nintendo 64. I had the chance to play it was at the end of the year 98, I will never forget that moment I saw those excellent graphics on the N64, the sense of exploration that gives you the game is very rewarding, it deserves a small space through this post.
As mentioned previously Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a game of the genre FPS which has as main characteristic to be a game of exploration, with many puzles and apart from platforms, conserving the frenetic essence of the FPS of that time, I consider that they knew how to mix to the perfection all these elements, there are moments in which you are concentrated to solve how to reach a certain point or giving super accurate jumps to be able to overcome the level and the favorite part of many excellent battles against multiple enemies which are not easy, simply brutal.

The developers did an excellent job in this video game, dinosaurs, enemies, weapons, practically all its graphic concept left in its moment to many people with the mouth open, I think something totally novel as they took advantage of the resources of the Nintendo 64 to power achieve that spectacular final finish.

The levels are very extensive, with many labyrinths and different ecosystems, this makes it really entertaining, to take an example we will go from a jungle with several mountains, bushes to a cave with little light and humidity, sometimes blue doors will open will take us to areas of another dimension, where we can get more lives, but they will not be easy, they test our skill in control to pass them, taking this into account we must decide whether to enter a portal and take the challenge or to move from him and continue our adventure.

Enemies pose a great threat in the game, at first they will be a bit easy, but as we go forward, it is clearly noted that they are there to prevent us from achieving our objectives, there is a very good variety with totally different attacks and resistances, this does that we have to handle different weapons depending on the situation in which we are.

Now that we touch the issue of weapons this is something that I think is really original, at first we will handle very common weapons like a gun, a bow or the big shotgun, but it gets to the point where we get some armaments as impressive as the cannon nuclear fusion or shockwave rifle, a total visual spectacle for every gamer who loves this genre.

As expected we will find in some parts of the game the great bosses, each of them has a pattern of very original attacks (some of them will give us headaches), the good thing is that we can see how much life we are eliminating, but the time is a bit of pressure because obviously the less life becomes more difficult it will be removed again.

Its gameplay is very good, at first it costs a little getting used to the command of the Nintendo 64 (and more when you come from the PC) apart from that this control did not have two analog as was the case of the Playstation, however it lends itself very well for the game, there comes a time when it is perfectly mastered to enjoy 100% of this great title, the only thing that I consider stressful are those jumps of perfect calculation that in situations we take out several gray.

Despite the limitations of the Nintendo 64 cartridge the developers were able to optimize both the music or the special sounds, speaking individually the musical section is really nice and fits with the type of game, one of my favorite songs is the world 3, is simply beastly, its sounds to me seem to be heard very well all arms, their shots are heard clear, (I only imagine if Nintendo had taken this console with support for CDs, would have been a monster).
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a game that once again highlighted the genre FPS in the history of video games, remaining as a school for many games later thanks to its innovative formula, in my small collection is one of the cartridges that I Turok: Dinosaur Hunter you have two options: just let it go and never know what it is. If you are a fan of the FPS and you have never been able to play Turok: Dinosaur Hunter fabulous is this game or download a rom and experience some of the best FPS created for the N64, luckily for those who have not been able to play, there is a remake for PC of the year 2015 which is the complete perfection of this great game of yore.

Muy buen post. Turok es un exelente clasico, deinitivamente fue uno de mis video juegos favoritos, al igual que Goldeneye.
@jorgevw
Gracias @jorgevw, yo pienso de la misma manera, esos dos juegos fueron un antes y un después en la gran N64. Saludos!!!
I used to love playing this game back when I was young.
Have been wanting to buy it again. That gun that would make the sky go blue was awesome :D
Yes, that was one of my favorite weapons, it really looked impressive as it changed the sky, it really was very powerful
