Developers tease Witcher crossover: What games could use Geralt?

in #gaming7 years ago

Earlier this week, the community lead at CD Projekt Red teased an appearance of Witcher protagonist, Geralt, in another game. Marcin Momot released a tweet detailing a possible crossover in one of 2018's upcoming games. The Witcher characters, specifically Geralt, are yet to appear outside of the series. With the Witcher 3 wrapping the series up, and the developers moving onto their next game Cyberpunk 2077, a crossover is the perfect way to use Geralt. Here's a list of some games that could work well with the inclusion of the White Wolf.

Soulcalibur 6

Rumours are suggesting that an appearance in Soulcalibur 6 is most likely. Not only was Bandai Namco, who is developing Soulcalibur 6, the international distributers of Witcher 3 but they also have a history of including outside characters in the series. The trend began with Soulcalibur 2, which included the console exclusive characters of Link(Gamecube), Heihachi Mishima(Playstation 2) and Spawn(Xbox). Soulcalibur 4 included Darth Vader, Yoda and Starkiller from Star Wars and the last game included Ezio from Assassin's Creed. Geralt would be a perfect fit for Soulcalibur, with his witcher reflexes and swordplay making him a worthy opponent for any series mainstay. Plus, who doesn't want to see Geralt's silver Soul Edge sword, fit with cat eyes and all.

Monster Hunter: World

Another possibility is that everyone's favourite monster slayer will appear in the latest Monster Hunter game. Witchers like Geralt are genetically mutated super soldiers, trained specifically to kill monsters. Therefore it's a perfect fit. Furthermore, Monster Hunter: World already lets players unlock characters from other games. An event running from February 28th to March 15th allows Playstation owners to unlock Horizon: Zero Dawn protagonist Aloy, and her bow. A timed event unlocking a Geralt skin and silver sword weapons would help keep interest in the game, especially as Capcom has announced future free DLC. Even bigger would be an inclusion of some monsters from the Witcher. Who wouldn't want to band together with a group of friends to hunt down an Endrega Queen?

Final Fantasy XV

In a similar sense to Monster Hunter: World, the inclusion of Geralt as a skin or companion would fit well. With the release of the PC version including an Ezio costume from Assassin's Creed it isn't entirely unlikely. The open world, fantasy setting and array of monsters it definitely something both games have in common, making a crossover seamless. Like Monster Hunter, they could also include some of the monsters from the Witcher. The Hunters of Final Fantasy XV and their bounties are almost identical to Witcher contracts. It'd be fun to accept a contract instead of a bounty to then accompany Geralt through a cave, hunting a Bruxa.

God of War IV

A key word in Momot's tweet was upcoming and one of 2018's most anticipated fantasy games is God Of War IV. Geralt's appearance would be in a very limited capacity, probably a cameo or side quest, but it would fit well. Many of the Witcher's polish folk lore inspired monsters share origins with God of War's Norse mythology. With Geralt hunting down trolls, cyclops and harpies, many of Kratos' victims are present in the world of the Witcher. The story of the Witcher 3 even revolves around Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse. A small cameo, in which Kratos acquires a silver sword from Geralt to slay Fenrir for example, would be a cool moment for Witcher fans that would fit into Kratos' new Norse world.

Kingdom Hearts 3

While this is definitely the least likely, it is my personal favourite. A hyper-realistic Sora, equipped with a silver key-blade, hunting down monsters would stand out from other levels. Like the Pirates of the Caribbean level in Kingdom Hearts 2, realistic themed levels still work with the cartoon aesthetic. The peasants of Velen often say Witchers are heartless, but imagine some of the heartless/monster hybrids. Some of Sora's companions are perfect fits when slightly altered. Just imaging a Leshen Goofy or Erynias Donald, and the parallels between Riku and Kairi with Geralt and Triss allow for a near perfect crossover.

Nice post! SoulCalibur VI really seems the most likely. Another fighter Geralt could fit in (but is less likely) is Mortal Kombat. The series also has a tradition of including fighters from other games or movie franchises like Kratos or Freddy Krueger. Another possibility could be a card game crossover with the upcoming Gwent. I haven't played any of these, but how does "Gwent X Hearthstone" sound :)?

I agree, soulcalibur seems a sweet fit. It would be epic if it was included in Mortal Kombat but we can wish right? Witty name haha!

Great info! I can't wait for SoulCalibur VI!

Thanks for the feedback! It certainly is an exciting title to wait for!
