- The Discord App is now Downloadable on the Xbox One
- The Discord App allows for players to communicate in real time, and is a functional alternative to Skype for Gamers
- Discord on the Xbox allows players to link their Xbox Live Accounts and their Discord Accounts
The Xbox team took to the Xbox blog to announce a Microsoft and Discord 'Team up' to 'Connect Gamers Across Xbox Live and Discord'.
"Connecting with friends is such a big part of why people game. Gamers all over the world use and love Discord to easily chat and connect with friends while they game. In the coming weeks, this collaboration will make it easier for gamers to choose to do just that..."
It's simple to link the accounts from both platforms, and Microsoft outlined easy steps to make the link in their Blog Post - Gamers are able to navigate through the Xbox UI to the 'Linked Social Accounts' tab, and link to Discord much like with Twitter or Facebook. Alternatively on the PC App, you can do this through the communications UI to link to Xbox.
The announcement of support for Discord comes at some surprise considering Microsoft's purchase of Skype in 2011 - It was a renown expectation that Microsoft would ride off of Skype for their communications services, however this 'Team Up' demonstrates that Microsoft is considering going against the grain in some circumstances.
Perhaps the Discord Linking feature will lead to improvements to the Xbox Live service as a whole in the future, and maybe this decision solidifies Discord's space in the gaming sphere.
You should check out Discord on Twitter, it's a good time.
This is a great idea for Microsoft! A lot of gamers have shifted to Discord and for a communication platform it's great.
Indeed, it does say alot though that they are not using skype and using discord!
Great news....
It sure is!
