Over 20 years ago, Baldur's Gate brought the dashboard role to computers around the world, adapting battle and decision systems to a digital adventure. He obviously was not the first to do it, but he was the one who had done the best so far and the one who set a series of standards. From there, the games of the genre were improving, evolving and diversifying mainly in combat. A Fallout: New Vegas or Mass Effect are very different from that title in combat, but very similar in terms of conversations and decisions. Disco Elysium looks like a game developed in a bunker in which the influences of BioWare, Obsidian and Bethesda have not entered in all this time. It is as if ZA / UM, the independent studio responsible for the game, has drawn all the blinds, hidden the mobile phones and cut the internet cables to ruminate on its election system; While dozens of games of the genre have been reiterated for years to improve the action, this one revolutionizes conversations to the same extent, always with feet on the board and hands full of dice. But its virtues go much further.

Mechanics that allow you to role-play for real

Our first objective in the game is to get the corpse down from the tree and start following the tracks of the crime. But as we try to do it, our to-do list fills up with objectives, some directly related to research and others that may be related in the future; It is never specified and whether or not to fulfill a mission can have unexpected consequences. We must bear in mind, of course, that there are missions that we can only do before a certain day or a certain time; the time in Disco Elysium does not advance in a traditional way, but only when talking to others or, rather, every time we select a dialogue option - we will have to be careful with how much we talk because we can run out of time to do a certain task, such as for example arriving at night with enough money to be able to pay us a night in the hotel and not stay out in the open.

Throughout the adventure we will unlock different knowledge that we can learn through another kind of talent tree whose boxes we must open by spending skill points. This knowledge not only gives us extra points to our senses, but also "knowledge" in the literal sense of the word: we can learn from criticizing ourselves, the functioning of the communist system, passing through the liberal economy or the system of division of the human species in races (sic); all of this unlocking and blocking dialogue options and affecting the perception that some and others have about us.
