Hey all,
I have seen a bunch of people talking about getting into Diablo which is awesome, it's a game I played for a long time (more Diablo 2 than 3). One of the criticisms I have seen is that there is no challenge during the story and it doesn't really get interesting until the end game. This is definitely an issue I had with D3 and is the main reason I decided to try out Grim Dawn.
Grim Dawn is an indie dungeon crawler that is very similar Diablo but added in a few things to give you more variety and definitely made the story part of the game more interesting and challenging. Here are the main differences from Diablo that i have found really enjoyable:
Multi-Class System:
One of the most unique things about Grim Dawn is it's multi-class system. You start out by choosing one of the 8 classes below and then once you get to level 10 you choose another class. This gives you 28 unique classes you can play and then many different play styles within each class to try out. Basically this gives the game a huge amount of replay.
Hidden Story Lines:
There are hidden quests that you will accidentally find as you are exploring the world that start side story lines such as the "Hidden Path" which gives you a clue for each quest you complete guiding you to the next location of the quest, often hidden behind hidden rock doors in walls. This gives you a fun reason to explore the world outside of what is required by the core story.
More difficult Story Line:
This is one of the biggest things for me especially if you want to play it solo. Trying to play D3 solo is basically pointless, you steamroll through the entire story with basically no risk of dying and not needing to every really farm up to face a boss and then just grind rifts at the end against yourself.
With Grim Dawn, there are challenges throughout the story as you progress. There will be areas you will come across and bosses you face that you will have to farm up to defeat which I personally find much more enjoyable than just steamrolling everything in my path.
Quality of Life Improvements:
Grim Dawn adds several QOL improvements that are really nice.
- Auto Sorting: you hit a button and your stash will be automatically sorted for you, clearing up much needed room for more loot.
- Cross Character Transfers: They have built out a really easy system for storing gear that can be accessed across all characters with is great.
Overall I have found that this game really has that Diablo 2 feel for those that loved the game and some really nice improvements on D2 as well. So if you loved D2 or D3 this is a great game to check out, you should be able to grab it on GoG or Steam, often times on a pretty good discount.
