Join fellow music lovers on a quest to find the best tracks!

Here's how it works:

OST_quest_what_is.png

"OST" stands for Original Soundtrack, a term used to describe the music from films / videogames. Each week there will be a new featured soundtrack to listen through and comment on. Regardless of your experience or familiarity with that week's OST, everyone's opinions are welcome! Part of the fun is discovering great music in unexpected places, so even if you think a particular OST isn't your style, give it a shot! You might be surprised!

As an added bonus, featured commenters will receive half of final payout from last week's post.

Featured comment from last week's post:

My favorite track from this game is also the most low-key: Cool Cave

I love the weird little chord build up at 0:24 that ends it an off key piano riff. Makes this track very much a "Kirby" song even though overall its a lot more chill and relaxed than what you'd expect from most Kirby games.

Why this OST?

It’s a short one this week! But this game’s soundtrack has one of my favorite tracks of all SNES / SFC music, see if you can figure out which one it is. I’ve never actually played this game but I came across this OST when I was on my mission to listen to all 1,500 SNES soundtracks which I wrote about here.

Also, since the YouTube playlist for this OST has no track list, either reference the names in the Zophar link above or just list the time code of your favorite track in your comment.

Comment Guidelines

Since this is a brand new series (and my first time running something like this) I won't lay down any hard rules, just remember to include the track title and an explanation on why you picked it. Feel free to be as detailed as you want! Music can be very personal and resonate very differently for every person. Maybe a song brings back special memories in your life, or a melody sounds similar to another favorite song of yours, or you just want to argue why your pick is the absolute best compared to all the others! Whatever it is, share it with us!

A few bonus tips: try to listen to the full OST before picking a song and writing your comment. Even if you find a track early on, you never know if an even better one is just around the corner! It's also perfectly ok to skip songs that you don't enjoy.

Comments will be accepted up to a week after the original post so take your time and soak in the music!

[Guidelines subject to change if the need arises.]

Rewards

While you can be sure to receive a vote from me if your comment is high quality, I'm also aware my voting power is limited! So I might create a system that rewards the top comment (or comments) with a share of the original post's final payout. The more people that participate, the greater potential for earning! (Allowing winners to pick next week's OST might be an option too) But for now we'll keep things simple and see how this test-run goes.

Why am I doing this?

I love listening to OSTs! As a kid I probably listened to more movie / videogame soundtracks than any other genre. And to this day I still love jumping into a fresh batch of OSTs I've never heard before and making playlists out of my favorite tracks (which you can find on my channel here). A few years back I made it my mission to listen to every Super Nintendo OST, to find all those hidden music gems in games I've never played before. I even made a steemit post about it here if you're curious!

And so, "OST Quest" was born out of my desire to share that sense of discovery with others and hopefully foster some interesting conversations about music in the process.

Time to get listening!

What a great idea @gmedley I was thinking of doing something similar as I have a passion for gaming music and still listen to snes music right to this very day, hmm honestly there's some good ones in here! I like the "select" music as it reminds me of the underground Mario game levels which was my first game, the other tune "password" is also good its almost like another track from Gaia Illusion Of Time which is a good game on the snes. Other good ones are "forest" "dragon" "ending A" "ending B" and "game over"

Hey thanks for chiming in and joining the listening party! (and yeah that "forest" track ranks highly for me, cant get enough of that piano / bass combo). Always great to hear from fellow music enthusiasts, and hey I'd follow along if you did start up something of your own for music. In the mean time, since you're likely to be the featured comment of this week (at this rate), do you have any requests for the next OST? Always open to suggestions rather than just pulling from my personals faves all the time.

I was going to talk about this one myself but I feel regardless this game does not get enough recognition because it was severely over shadowed by another game yet I feel this one is superior in gameplay and music.
@gmedley perhaps you have have heard of it but "Secret Of Evermore" is not only a great game but its music is awesome even if you dont like the game, yourself as a music lover may enjoy its tunes.

Ohh yeah that's a fantastic OST! I haven't played it (but probably will one of these days just out of curiosity). Yeah I may well use that for next week's quest if you don't mind!

Ah so @gmedley you heard of its music? I am not sure what kind of games you play but I really loved the game it still remains one of my favourites. Yeah I would be happy if you did, as I said the game needs to be continued to be discussed so what better way then its music.
