Resident Evil (game): The original survival horror game

in #gaming6 years ago

Let me take you back in time to the mid 90's when the fact that you were playing a game on a CD was just mind-blowing. Up to that point all consoles had been on cartridges except for relatively useless add ons such as the Sega-CD and TurboGrafx CD (which didn't even contain any game data, only audio - what a sham.)

When Resident Evil was released yeah, there was internet, not that you would get anything useful from it, so playing Resident Evil actually consisted of figuring it out on your own. Amazing right? no Youtube walkthroughs because Youtube didn't exist yet.

The world had not yet seen a game like this before, and zombies were not all the rage like they are today. Therefore, to suggest this game was revolutionary is an understatement. It was genuinely scary and the graphics were pretty top-end considering the time-period.

I will never forget how i jumped the first time a zombie dog jumped through the window behind me

The scarcity of ammo was something that really hadn't occurred in a game before and if you were like me you were not expecting this and therefore killed everything instead of running which resulted in you not having enough bullets later when you actually needed them.

Resident Evil also had a type of savegame that I had never encoutered before which entailed that you could save anytime you want (in safe rooms that had typewriters) but there was a limited amount of ribbons that were to be found in the game. Therefore, if you just saved like a madman in the beginning, you may find yourself needing to backtrack a long ways later on when your ribbons have run out. Health was also something you had to carefully manage because there were only so many healing items in the game and once again, if you used them too early you will have to go without later on.

finding the shotgun was a game-changer, but once again you faced the problem with constantly low ammo

One way to conserve ammo was to wait until your enemy was nearly upon you and then aim for the head. This was a dangerous thing to attempt because if you timed it wrong the zombies would latch on to you, drain your health, and also make you susceptible to attacks from other enemies. My pal and I figured out that for the slower zombies, it is actually better to "juke" them (avoid them) than it was to engage them at all. This wasn't that hard to do and they posed very little threat once you got by them.

The bosses were pretty epic but there was something that wasn't very epic at first glance but later became one of my favorite aspects of the game: The really terrible voice acting. Especially in the case of a minor character named Barry, this voice acting is just flat out awful.

what is it? over and over and over again

The game was later remastered (a lot later actually) and re-released with some minor changes to the game and this was a wonderful opportunity for them to essentially sell you the same game twice. It sold quite well both times and as you can see by the fact that there are multiple (most pretty bad) movies and nearly 10 installments in the game franchise that this can be considered one of the most successful games of all time.

My review score is based on the time period the game was released. Compared to today's games RE is pretty average in my opinion and I didn't really even enjoy the past 2 installment which are basically movies that you occasionally control. The game was essentially the best thing anyone had ever played at that point in time and for that reason alone it gets really high marks from me.

9 / 10

Yes finally a common game, I played this game too, on my pc, it was okay,Nemesis was too tough to kill, there was a part I couldnt get through that took all of my time, i was supposed to ignite a blow torch to blast my way through some abandoned cars, it took time jeez. The game is okay, graphics are not top notch but, acceptable given the time, nice weapons, nice game play i give it 8/10.

This is the game that started it all. This game truly is one of the best classics in gaming history. The atmosphere and puzzles are still great and when playing the game you get the sense of nostalgia and it really is just great to relive a classic. People say the controls suck even when the game was released but i say that the games meant to be like that. I believe its supposed to be hard to evade the various monsters on the mansion grounds. The intro and voice acting, even how terrible they might be, will always remain as some of the most memorable things from this game. No matter what your genre is in gaming, no one can say that this game is not a classic and will be forever.

Resident Evil is a classic since the first deliver like the RE2 and RE3 that are actually pretty good, I recently downloaded the PSONE emulator just to play them for a while. At that time it was one of the best shooting and action games of the years. Although I'm staying with the RE4 because I was able to play it about 5 times and it brings back quite a few memories, I must admit that to finish these games on a hard mode, you must have enough patience and skill, as saving bullets and avoiding being hit by zombies is done is a matter of time.

I did meet this game -well not like that, i mean RE2 was the first one i've played- because my bro had a PS1 which was the coolest game on that decade above N64. It was exciting and scariest...

I'll never forget how I jumped the first time a zombie dog jumped out the window behind me.

You were not the only one who jumped out of the LOL chair ..

Resident evil has always been my favorite game since the beginning of the saga and you are right there was no YouTube at that time everything had to happen and find out on our own.

The game that seemed to me somewhat complicated to pass was Dino crisis because almost all the main doors had a private key that you had to guess.

I should make a publication talking about how complicated this game was in our youth.
