The River Nile

After meeting with Cleopatra you set off for the Nile Delta in search of the Scarab. Along the way you rescue a meek old man named Ghupa being held captive by a group of soldiers. You learn he’s been savaged by them before and during their last encounter they cut his tongue from his head. As you deliver him home to the village of Sais his grandson welcomes you. He calls for his mother and yells grandfather was mistaken for a beggar again! Ghupa gives you a letter suggesting the Scarab is seeking more men at Letopolis. She gasps and says that’s where my husband Taharqa is. Letopolis you enquire? The city swallowed by the desert? Beaming with pride the boy tells you his fathers destiny is to rebuild it and soon he and his mother will join him there.

You travel to Letopolis, an ancient city that has stood for nearly two thousand years before the sands nearly consumed it. Here you meet Taharqa. He introduces himself as master builder of Sais and Stewart of Letopolis. He tells you of his dream for his son and his sons to follow in his footsteps. The world is made by great men dreaming big, what do you dream of Bayek he asks? You explain that you do not have the luxury of dreams and must find the Scarab. He tells you the Scarab preys only on the weak and is no threat to you. What happened to poor Ghupa tears me he says. Whatever my life’s work, whatever I did to bring that down on him I beg the gods for forgiveness. At that moment another resident of Letopolis dashes into the room and screams they’re attacking the ruins again!

Bandits of the Storm

Taharqa asks for your help to protect the city. You see the sand begin whipping through the air as a sandstorm approaches. He tells you the raiders use the cover of these storms to mask their raids. Wave after wave of bandit is felled by your sword as you push through the city. The sandstorm is blinding and the howling wind is near deafening but you persist. When the storm begins to pass by, the last of the remaining bandits is dispatched. Taharqa wastes no time with celebration and asks you to ride with him to the bandit camp and end this threat for good. In return for your help he agrees to tell you about the Scarab but only after the bandits are returned to the desert they so love. You agree and set off across the sand to the shores of the river Nile.

You tell Taharqa the task of restoring Letopolis seems impossible. He laughs. Only the gods can know that for sure Bayek. And if I do not reach for the stars how will I know how close I can get? Letopolis was a wonder once, before the desert overtook it. I mean to show the world, show the gods that men can conquer anything if they put their minds to it. Soon you reach the bandit hideout in a small cave near the river. The bandits are unprepared and you use this to your advantage. As the last bandit is felled, Taharqa thanks you. Before you arrived I thought my dream was doomed to die. You gave me the strength to hunt down those reavers. They worship Sekhet the lady of slaughter and they wish for nothing more than chaos and ruin.

The Scarab

Taharqa prepares a celebration feast and invites you to his home. When you arrive you find his family has already made the trip from Sais. His son comments on all the sand burying the city. Taharqa bellows out, enough sand to fill a lifetime. That’s why we need so many to help us with our great work. You ask what he offers them in return for their service. He replies a parcel of land and a house to call their own. They must only help reclaim it from the desert. This is no simple task and we must all pitch in to honor the gods. As the evening goes on you begin to feel ill. At first your vision begins to blur and you begin to stumble before falling to the floor with a thud. You attempt to focus but drift off into unconsciousness.

As you wake you find yourself buried to your neck in the blazing desert heat. The buzzards circle above and scorpions skitter nearby on the sand. You manage to free an arm but the midsummer sun is scorching hot and it’s not long before you begin to hallucinate. You apologize to your wife and son for failing them. You nearly accept that you will soon walk with the hidden one in the afterlife. As you await your fate you call out to your horse one last time. To your amazement the stubborn beast comes near but stops just short. You call for him but he will not budge. Suddenly Senu your falcon companion swoops down to startle the horse which sends him galloping by. You grasp a rope dangling from the saddle and it pulls you free from the sand.

Dust to Dust

Tracks in the sand lead you to a small outpost where you find your stolen gear. Fully equipped you ride for Letopolis to face down your enemy, Taharqa the Scarab. You slice through his guards before tossing a dagger through his chest. As he lay dying he looks at you and says so this is how a dream dies. I could have built something to last an age. There are things I regret. We all labour for higher powers we are all enthroned to greater forces. This victory will not bring you peace. You scream it’s not peace that I seek! It’s not for my soul that I walk this path. The order of ancients will remember me as the bringer of water and the builder of cities. As he drifts away you say and now the desert will blow in and scatter the dream of Letopolis like dust.

A scream echoes from behind as the Scarabs son charges towards you. I will cut you down for what you did to my father he screams. His mother falls to her knees weeping as he continues screaming at you. I thought you were our friend. I hate you. You look at Ghupa who is holding the child back. You ask him to look after them and to help them understand. His sobbing mother cries out you have brought blood and death to our house. You tell her she is blind and must now open her eyes. Your husband was the Scarab, he did this. Your father was tortured and scarred by this man as have so many others. It’s up to you to raise your boy right, not in the blood and shadows of his father’s legacy.
