So a game for 99 cents? That usually goes very wrong. Yes there are tons of these being released on Steam everyday and usually they are there just to cash in on those people are looking for Steam trading card or achievements. Lets find out whether this one is actually a good puzzle game.
Gameplay
So, gameplay wise, the game is rather simplistic. At least on the first viewing. You just click on block to make balls appear from a particular direction and you aim to destroy all the blocks. Of course, this can be deceptively simple, specially in the first levels. But as you progress further and further into the levels, the game becomes more and more complex, requiring more thinking before you can finish the level.
Another surprise to me was the sheer amount of mechanics actually embedded into the game. At first, I was sort of scared that just throwing balls at blocks will be all there is to the game (and to a degree it is) but as you venture into more and more levels, new mechanics will be thrown at you very often.
From balls that instead of breaking the blocks make them completely vanish, exploding blocks or the ability to move some of the blocks and more! All of these then require you to change your approach to solving the levels. And the 75 levels the game has, promise about 2 – 3 hours of straight gameplay.
So gameplay wise the game is actually fun, isn’t overly simplistic (because that would have been an issue with a puzzle game) and has enough mechanics to not just be a cash grab. So far, I’m loving this little puzzle game.
Another thing you need to remember when playing this game, is that it was fully done by a single developer! And the fact that he managed to cram so much content into such a small game is simply amazing to me!
The one thing I actually want to see added to this is support for Android as it is currently available on PCs through Steam and on iOS.
Graphics
Now lets take a look at the games graphics. These are voxel based (that means everything is made of blocks) and that makes the game look surprisingly good. I’m not going to tell you that it is the best looking game ever, but you can check out the footage yourselves and see that for it’s price the game look stunning.
Performance
Performance wise there really isn’t much to talk about. It’s a Unity game and uses only very simple graphics. So it runs well on pretty much any potato computer. And I haven’t seen any bugs nor have I experienced any crashes. A+ on performance.
Conclusion
So, in conclusion: The Art of Gravity is a surprisingly great little puzzle game. Specially when you take into consideration it’s prize of 1 dollar. So if you are looking for a quick game to play on the evening on your computer or something to play on your Apple device (since it’s also released for iOS) I can highly recommend picking this little hidden gem up.
Love this game.
