Devil May Cry HD Collection Review - Added artwork for the fan

In 2012 Capcom already came with an HD collection of the first three adventures of demon hunter Dante. Rox picked up the games at the time, but came to the conclusion that this upgrade was on the lazy side. Now comes Capcom with a new HD Collection, but is it better? You can read it in this Devil May Cry HD Collection review!

When you think of Capcom, you think of games like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter. Both franchises have been given a new part in recent years. Only Devil May Cry, also one of Capcom's showpieces, has been in the fridge since. But recently it is buzzing with rumors around a new Devil May Cry.

Now that the first three games around our white-haired demon hunter come to the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One in a new HD Collection, this only adds to that. But how new is this collection actually?

A polished port from the old collection

A justified question. Because after all, it's three old games that have already come to a new generation in a reasonably rudimentary form. The games were not or hardly polished at the time, but the resolution was simply a little boosted to 720p to make everything look tighter. It was, as it were, a facelift of a once beautiful lady, where you could clearly see that she was full of wrinkles.

And now Capcom does the same trick as before. Because that old lady with the bad facelift has gone back to the doctor to make things even tighter. To be precise, the Devil May Cry HD Collection now makes the step from 720p to 1080i. As a bonus there is a 'Vault' added in which you can enjoy various renders and sketches of the various games.

Apart from that, there are some minimal adjustments in the menu. For example, you can now switch between games without closing the whole lot. It is an improvement, but at the bottom of the line this is a lazy port of an already riddled collection of older games. And that feels, despite the soft price of 30 euros, as a money whisk.

But that does not mean that the Devil May Cry HD Collection is bad in itself. Because this collection of games is indeed 66 percent cool!

The beginning of a legendary franchise

Devil May Cry, the first game in the collection, follows Dante. He is the half demonic son of the demon Sparda, who once beat Mundus mercilessly and brought back the rest to Mundai. This event is in a distant past at the time of the game and Mundus is now back. He wants revenge and wants the world at his feet.

But then there is Dante, who comes to a stop here. How? By rattling off all the demons and pumping them full of lead with his faithful shooting irons Ebony and Ivory. Along the way Mundus Dante raises various challenges in the form of challenging boss battles and varied puzzles. And although this is an outdated game (from 2001), the gameplay itself still proves to be nice with the games of today.

There is only an outdated look that comes to the fore everywhere. Textures are stuck on the wall, characters are angularly worked out and the level of detail that we are accustomed to today can not be found here.

The 33 percent that form the big downside of the collection

This is also something that comes from this collection in the second part of 2013. In Devil May Cry 2 you see that there is progress in the graphical side of the game, but still it is still angular characters and pasted textures what the clock strikes.

Of course you also get into the game again in the skin of Dante who has learned some new tricks with his sword this time. But the demons in the game have apparently been sleeping. The game is a lot easier than its predecessor.

Moreover, the story in the game is also rattled off, which does not make it better. Mundus is apparently still angry and his plan simply has to be thwarted again. More than that is not there. In combination with the lack of challenge, we do not have to explain further that this is the least part of the collection.

The part that surpasses everything

But fortunately Capcom knew how to listen to the feedback from fans. The developer quickly came with a third part. And that is the part for which you should actually buy this Devil May Cry HD Collection. Capcom surpasses both previous parts by combining elements of the games.

The combosystem from Devil May Cry 2 is further expanded and the strong gameplay from the first part is completely back. Just like the challenge that the first part gave you. Graphically, this game has gone a step further so that Dante with his white forest hair and red leather jacket looks even better.

And the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 3, the version you get in this HD Collection, also contains the possibility to play with another character. Vergil, the brother of Dante offers you the chance to view everything from a different angle and try new combos. But no matter how cool this game is (still), you really miss that real upgrade to today.

Incomplete

And the same applies to the entire collection that, as reported, is really lazy. Because why was there chosen to almost literally transfer this collection? After all, there is a fourth game that already received a special edition in 2015. If you then release a new collection, add it immediately.

It is a huge missed opportunity to make this collection feel different than the previous edition. And actually the title Devil May Cry HD Collection is not right now, because you miss a game that really should be included.

Conclusion

Of course it's cool that the three games in question have found their way to the new consoles. After all, they are cool games. And for that reason alone they are already worth 30 euros.
But if you've already bought the previous collection, you're not going to discover anything new here and then it's a waste of your money. If everything had improved a lot or if the fourth part had been there, it would have been very different. But now it really feels like a cash cow that is being milked again for the arrival of Devil May Cry 5.
