Kirby makes his debut on the Nintendo Switch with a brand new adventure called Kirby Star Allies! In this game, our hero pulls back into a 2D platformer as always, but this time he gets help from numerous friends. We share our first impression in this Kirby Star Allies preview.
Kirby is a busy owner. Last year the pink hero existed 25 years and that was celebrated with three different games! To top it all off, a brand new Kirby game was announced during the E3, a colorful platform adventure for the Nintendo Switch called Kirby Star Allies.
Like Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot before, Kirby in Kirby Star Allies runs through countless different levels full of puzzles, enemies and secret collectibles. But where in the previous two titles the focus was mainly on singleplayer, the focus at Kirby Star Allies is entirely on the co-op multiplayer experience that the game offers.
The game is not called Star Allies for nothing! In this adventure, Kirby is supported by his endless amount of friends he has made in recent years. No less than three friends can play as these so-called 'allies'. what makes for a great co-op adventure!
Spread the love
Just after Dream Land is recovered from the alien invasion during Kirby Planet Robobot, Kirby's homeland is again attacked by a new evil. It is raining dark hearts! Everyone who comes into contact with these dark hearts becomes a bad person. That is how King Dedede starts to steal all the food in Dream Land for himself after he comes into contact with a dark heart.
Kirby is also hit, but with a completely different outcome! Kirby is given the gift to spread his love to make new friends who help him during his journey to liberate Dream Land from this new evil. By pressing the X button Kirby throws his heart to an enemy.
This enemy then changes into a friend and will follow Kirby everywhere. The friends are controlled by the computer, just like the Helpers in Kirby Super Star.
But the charm of this new mechanic really comes to the fore when this friend is driven by one of your friends or girlfriends. You can experience Kirby Star Allies with a team of up to four players! Yes, that makes us happy.
From helper to hero
All these playable characters have their own powers. These are based on the endless amount of copy forces that Kirby can get. This way, every player can choose a hero for choices. This makes the friends feel very unique, since every power has a different effect.
When you combine the strengths of you and friends you can use the brand new friends! This allows you to solve different puzzles, improve your weapons or even perform stronger attacks. You do this by pushing the analog stick up. Kirby or one of his friends can then combine his powers with different elements by giving them to friends.
This allows for super strong combinations such as an electric sword (which looks suspiciously like Robins Levin Sword from Fire Emblem) or an all-shattering curling stone when you combine the forces of ice and stone. There are endless combinations to come up with!
The power of friendship
Working together to create different combinations of strength expresses a good friendship, but Kirby and his friends are only really close when they perform a big special attack! During these attacks you literally form a circle of friends to roll through, or you roll over hordes of enemies with the most aggressive polonaise ever as a friend train!
In addition, there are also some new powers! Water returns from Return to Dream Land and also Beetle from Triple Deluxe is back again. The beloved Yo-Yo force is also back again and can even transform thanks to the different combinations of forces.
Brand new is the Artist power. With this Kirby gets access to a magic paint brush to deal with enemies. Art has never been so powerful! Finally, there is the Spider force with which Kirby captures his prey in a spider web, Spiderman style.
Besides the main adventure, there are of course also some mini games to play for some variety. These mini games come in the form of a woodcut contest full of obstacles and a baseball ''who can beat the furthest'' competition in which everything revolves around the right timing. These mini games can be played with the motion controls of the joy-con, but also with buttons from the controller.
Preliminary Conclusion
The game also supports amiibo. By scanning various amiibo you will receive various extras such as food to repair some HP and in some cases even extra puzzle pieces to collect to unlock extra pictures.
Kirby Star Allies promises to be a beautiful Kirby title again. The game is just as good when you play it on your own, but like with so many activities, you get the full potential out of the game by playing with multiple players. This may occasionally be chaotic, which ultimately depends on the attitude of the player himself. Good teamwork is therefore the key to success.
We advise you to gather friends to play this adventure, because Kirby Star Allies can be the co-op sensation of this year!
So like to go out with Kirby and his friends? Just be patient! The game will appear in stores on March 16. Pre-order Kirby Star Allies now to get started on the day of release.
