You know it: you sit with your friends on the couch, you have the biggest plans for the evening, but before you go on with your hair neatly combed, a new shirt and a trendy jeans to your means, you want to do a quick game. You can get that dusty board game from the attic, but why bother doing so if you can also play a party game on your favorite console? With the arrival of Scribblenauts to the PlayStation 4 you suddenly have that party game in your hands. You slide the disc in your console and you share the controllers to your friends. Will this be a night of laughter, yelling and roaring or will you go out in disappointment and kick the first best trash can when you leave the house? You can read our findings from Scribblenauts Showdown below.

For the first time on the PlayStation

Scribblenauts makes its debut on PlayStation 4. All previous parts came out for various Nintendo consoles, but now we can finally get started with this party game. Actually it is already striking that the entry threshold of this game is extremely low. Everything, but then everything is explained to you in tutorials that appear when the game has to load. Luckily the loading screens do not last that long and after that you can get started right away in the different modes that the game offers.

You can also create your own character, but for the sake of honesty you have to say that this is really fun if you have played the game a bit longer. This is because of the items that you can unlock during the game. The most important thing here is the creation hub, where you can make infinitely many attributes, objects and even animals. You will use it a lot in Sandbox mode, but more on that later in this review. Let's start with the mode where we were the first to dive in and that is Versus mode.

Vocabulary or speed?

In Versus mode you can choose to record it against the computer or a friend next to you on the couch. Then choose a best from 5, 7 or 9 rounds. You also have to make a choice from word games or speed games. With the former, the intention is to make an object by means of words. That sounds very vague, but in practice it is obvious. For example, there is a mini-game in which you have to balance objects on a flying carpet.

If you make an object based on a word in the run-up to this mini-game and this object is smaller than the opponent's, you will gain a lot of advantage. Imagine you get the initial 'B', then you come up with a smaller 'ax' a lot better for the day than with a large 'oil rig'. A cool concept, but it is not that typing words with the controller is really terrible. You go with the left stick to the right plane and there you can by pressing the right buttons take a letter of your choice.

That is not so bad for small words, but if you have to make long words you make spelling mistakes and you have to erase everything. This in an almost as annoying way as entering the letters. That should have been different for efficiency. As mentioned, there are speed games besides word games. Here it comes purely and only to speed and reflexes. In this case it is important to press the right buttons at the right time or to quickly hit a few buttons to win a game.

Again that mini-game?

There are a few crazy mini-games that will definitely put a smile on your face, but please do not get too excited... The game lacks a really extensive arsenal of mini-games. There may be only around 20 mini-games and you will understand that if you play a best of 9 rounds, after 3 pots you have had everything once. We even had the idea that the mini-games were the same in a round of 7, all the same as in the very first game.

The real fun, memorable mini-games are also missing, they are often mini-games that we have already played in free games for our tablets or phones. In some cases even more extensive and that is really a missed opportunity if you ask us. Everyone who used to play a Scribblenauts, will notice that it felt much better on a handheld than on PlayStation 4 now and that's a shame, because with some more mini-games and better control it would have been a lot nicer.

During the game you unlock Starites. This is the currency in the Scribblenauts games. This allows you to buy items to make in Sandbox mode (and believe us, sometimes you really need it). You buy new levels with it in Sandbox mode, or maybe just that one headgear or that T-shirt for your own character. The choice to create your own character to your taste is quite large. Choose a clown with blood splashes on his shirt or rather for a sweet, innocent girl with a kittig dress, it's all possible in this game.

Conclusion

Finally a Scribblenauts game for our favorite console. We do not have a lot of party games on PlayStation 4, so this game is welcome. The very low entry threshold, the cheerful colors, the fun characters and fun mini-games provide entertainment. Unfortunately Scribblenauts Showdown is not the ultimate party game for the PlayStation 4. This is due to the fact that it repeats fairly quickly and also the Sandbox mode with only 8 levels is limited. There are certainly nice mini-games in this title, but after an hour you have seen everything. The debut of Scribblenauts on the PlayStation 4 is therefore somewhat disappointing. A missed opportunity as far as we are concerned, better next time!

➕ Fun party game for young and old
➕ Low entry threshold
➕ Nice characters
➕ Collect and publish Starites

➖ Falls fairly quickly
➖ Irritant typing with the controller
➖ Sandbox mode contains only 8 levels
➖ Too few mini-games

Thanks for reading.
