Gamescom News
Their plans for Gamescom is to release a few new item skins. They will not be rolling out the full system until they leave early access. However, at Gamescom, they will release a few new cosmetic items and test a new case and key system.
On August 3rd, they will be launching three new crates. All three crates will contain items that were inspired by the Battle Royale Movie. The first crate named the Wanderer Crate and the second named Survivor Crate will be free to open each including one set of themed clothing. The third crate named the Gamescom invitational crate will have a more diverse pool of themed clothing. You will be able to use your battle-points to buy the crates on the Rewards page. The first two will be free to open, where as the Gamescom invitational crate will need a key to open which will cost $2.50 each.
After Gamescom is complete on August the 27th, the Invitational crate will be removed from the game, and they will return to the free to open system. The Gamescom invitational crate, wanderer crate and survivor crate will be tradeable on the steam community market. The Gamescom Invitational Crate keys will also still be able to be purchased in-game.
Here are a few of the items that will be added.
Gamescom Invitational Crate - $2.50 to open
Survivor Crate movie inspired skin - Free to open
Wanderer Crate movie inspired skin - Free to open

I do like the new skins but I'm not a fan of microtransactions.
Microtransactions would imply that you need to pay for them. Only 1 out of the 3 new cases will have that. And the current one in-game you don't use real money to pay for either. Only the 1 case from Gamescom will need you to pay to open, so it doesn't really bother me. I just won't open that case and instead save them if I get them and hope once they are no longer able to be obtained they go up in price on the market so that I can sell them for some decent money. All of the other cases though, you use the in-game credit that you get from winning games and getting kills to purchase the crates and open, which is a great feature and doesn't count as microtransactions.
