Super Mario Run forces you to throw out Mario’s tried and true mechanics for a 2d, side scrolling endless runner. With a new style of Mario game and the same nuances we’ve grown to love, Super Mario Run makes for an entertaining game that can be enjoyed in shorts bursts.

Super Mario Run keeps you running forward in fast paced levels, getting over Goombas, smashing blocks and trying to reach special coins. Mario runs automatically making for an easy game to pick up but adding depth with the only input being tapping on the screen. Whether you want to casually breeze on through, or reach all three levels of special coins, Super Mario Run reaches a wide audience with this gameplay style.

World Tour is packed with a variety of levels, spanning six worlds. With each world having three levels and a mini boss, Super Mario Run intuitively teaches you about each stage and introduces different aspects along the way. Collecting special coins gradually gets more difficult and alternate paths try to misdirect you away from powerups and coins. With three different types of special coins to get, it can get addicting trying different strategies to collect them all.

In Toad Rally, you use Rally Tickets to go one-on-one with another player on a timed run to get as many coins and Toads to cheer for you, the ladder joining your castle if you win. For each level you collect all the special coins in World Tour, you’re awarded two rally tickets. Each level is based on one from World Tour and doesn’t have an end allowing you to use your environment to stack up the points until the clock runs out. It’s a nice departure from World Tour and a challenge to try and beat the person on the other end.

An added bonus is the Kingdom Builder. It lets you use coins to shop for different items to decorate your Kingdom with. Some special items are only unlocked when you have enough Toads, giving you an excuse to keep playing Toad Rally. Although most are for aesthetic appeal, some have an added benefit. There are mini games and question blocks that give you extra Rally Tickets, each of which reset every 24 hours.

For people who jump in head first with anticipation for Super Mario Run, it'll come to an abrupt halt after the first few levels. The game, priced at $10, only let’s you play the first three levels, for free. Here, you’ll have to pay to unlock the full game and some people will argue that it should’ve been free, that it’s too expensive or have pay-as-you-play in-app purchases. Although having Super Mario Run as a ‘“freemium” game would have de-valued the experience, having the entire first world free would’ve been a better strategy by Nintendo, giving more time to explore of Super Mario Run.

With it’s addicting gameplay, intuitive input and a formula that’s been proven for decades, Super Mario makes his debut onto our mobile devices, and it’s one we can undoubtedly enjoy.
