5 cool gameplay mechanics that the new PREY game bring to the table

in #gaming7 years ago

Prey is a surprisingly good game that bring together some original ideas, but also refines some older ones from its spiritual predecessors like System Shock 2 and Bioshock.
Among the ideas on display in the game, here are 5 cool gameplay mechanics that are used to great effect in the game.

1.Recycler Charge

One of the cool weapons that Prey brings to the table is the recycle grenade. throw it in a room full of miscellaneous objects and it will transform them into usable resources. but that's not what I really ended up using them for. I didn't want to invest in the leverage skill, 'cause I didn't find it all that exciting. But I also found a lot of loot rooms blocked off by various cases which I couldn't lift to get out of the way. that's when the grenades came in. Toss one at the cases, poof, resources fall on the ground and the way is clear. Plus, they do damage to the typhon. Neat-o!

2.Tracking people with the security system

A cool thing about Prey is that the developer tried to give Talos 1 the appearance of it being "lived in". What really makes that come across is the fact that all people on the station are accounted for. Each corpse has a name, and a role. And all them can be tracked using security stations, all across Talos 1. This is also used in several side quests, but it can also be useful if you want to loot everything in the game.
It really does serve to add a note of realism to the game

3.Space walk

Talos 1, as a game world, is a fully developed place. So much so, that you can get out of the station in your space suit, and jet around it.
It really feels like the developers built it to scale. Another really cool thing is that you can leave the station thru an airlock in one section and enter it in another. In fact, you'll have to at one point. In space, there are quests to solve, bodies with loot to find and there's even some combat about. The enormity of the station is what really comes thru though.

Lovely place, too bad it’s infested

4.Transformation into objects
In the style of Skyrim and other Bethesda games, you can interact with most objects in the game world. But what really sets Prey apart is the fact that, once you get the possibility to upgrade to Typhon powers, you can get the mimic ability from the aliens. This means that you can transform yourself into almost any object in the world. See a locked room with boarded up windows? Smash the windows and squeeze yourself thru the small holes by transforming into a mug. Cool!

Yep, that’s me

5.Gloo gun

Last but not least is the Gloo gun. Useful in combat as well as a utilitarian gun. In combat you can freeze enemies in place by peppering them with gloo and taking the time to whack them over the head with the wrench (plus you get bonus damage with the gloo-wrench combo). Outside of combat it can be used to build small platforms to climb up walls and to temporarily stop those pesky fuse boxes from frying your health.

Freeze scumbag!

Overall Prey is great addition to 2017’s lineup of AAA games, with a few innovative ideas and a few recycled ones to boot. However, what truly sets the game apart are the above mentioned mechanics. Hopefully the game will do well so we can see a Prey 2 in the near future (not again! :( )
