Anyone who has been to Las Vegas knows that once they walk through the gates, casinos emit an oddly artificial aura. According to the psychologist, the goal is to induce a state of trance in players.
"Casinos make you feel intimate, closed, euphoric, you are in a suggestible state in which you want to stay where you are and continue to do what you do," said Kati St Clair, a corporate psychologist.
But how can a casino be designed to encourage people to play more and longer?
Playing in Las Vegas casinos can be a disorienting experience, partly due to light and lack of clocks. Casinos can even simulate daylight during the dark hours to encourage players to stay at tables and slot machines while spending their money.
The music of a casino will be familiar to anyone who has spent time in a supermarket or mall. "The casinos are rather uterine," explains Kati St Clair. "Almost always the color is red and the music is soft and continuous. All this contributes to the trance state of a player.
No ordinary air conditioning in American casinos, extra oxygen is pumped to help players stay awake and focused.
