The Worst Star Fox Game Ever Made! - Negatives - Rerez

in #gaming7 years ago

So I sat down and played Star Fox Adventures because a lot of people seem to have polarizing feelings about this game. On one side you have a whole bunch of people like Jontron saying that this game is absolutely terrible and then on the other side you've got a lot of people like IGN saying this game is absolutely fantastic. IGN gave this game a 9 out of 10. A 9 out of 10! And my own personal feelings about it is that when I played it I really, really, really didn't enjoy it. However the general consensus out there is that this game is really good so today we're going to take a look at the game and find everything that is wrong with it. Let's find the negatives.

When the GameCube came out everybody wanted a Star Fox game on the platform and eventually we got a real one with Star Fox Assault in 2005. But before that happened we got another Star Fox game. One that is just kind of awkward. It all started when Rare wanted to make a game called Dinosaur Planet with a main character named Crystal who was a blue fox or something and she defended and fought dinosaurs and lizards and stuff. I really don't know what the exact game was supposed to be. All I know is that game didn't come out because the people at Nintendo figured that this game wouldn't really appeal to anybody. So what they decided to do was they took the Star Fox IP and shoved it into Dinosaur Planet and that's how you get Star Fox Adventures. A game that pretty much isn't really Dinosaur Planet but isn't really a Star Fox game. But it is Rare attempting to do both things at the same time and my own personal view on this is that it failed. There's a bunch of features about this game that people like. The fact that Fox McCloud is actually outside of his arwing for once and walking around was pretty cool because you really didn't get to see that in the games that came before it. See Star Fox is all about being in an arwing fighting things in space and in some cases getting into tanks and stuff like that. But it's all about vehicle combat. And this game kind of used that in some weird instances but the majority of the game takes place on foot exploring the land and all that fun stuff.

But that's my problem. For me that's not what Star Fox was all about. And what really got me was the fact that everything they tried to do in this game was pretty much stuff that we got in Zelda but now it’s done worse. You know the rupee system right? You find rupees in Zelda, you collect them and then you buy things. Well in this game you've got these little bugs which would have been fine as a currency but they run away from you! Fast! And I don't like that. I don't like the idea that I've got sentient money that runs away from me. Whenever I see them on the screen it's the most irritating thing but nobody ever complains about that. No when they play this game what they talk about is how awesome it is to be Star Fox and to have dinosaurs all over the place. Oh and Crystals so beautiful. Who cares?! This game is terrible and I could spend an hour talking about everything that's wrong with it but let's not even get into that. It's a pretty decent platforming adventure game that's ripping off Zelda pretty much one to one. Here are the big problems with it.

Capture3.PNG

So the first big problem with this game is that the vehicle sequences really suck. See a big issue with me is that Star Fox is all about the vehicle sequences. That's pretty much what Star Fox on SNES is all about. Flying in space and attacking things and maneuvering and stuff like that. In this game they do utilize these arwing sequences in space but they're just not very good. They feel really short, they feel kind of imprecise and it never feels like you're playing a real experience. And the reason why its like that is because its Rare trying to make a Star Fox game something they were probably not familiar with or comfortable with doing. While Rare was capable of doing a lot of really good things on the GameCube and on other systems that came before it they were not capable of making a good Star Fox game. When it came to making the big fight sequences in space every fight sequence I played just felt really vanilla and cookie cutter. Nothing ever had a challenge it just felt really boring and on top of that there are other vehicle sequences stuffed into the game that pull you out of the Zelda like gameplay. I absolutely hated that. So the first negative is that this game has bad vehicle sequences.

Night and day cycles are used in a lot of games like Shenmue or Grand Theft Auto. In both of those games those night and day cycles completely change the environment that you're playing in. Certain stores open, certain stores close and the whole reason they do that is to build the experience of being in a real live breathing city. But in this game they use a day and night cycle for no reason whatsoever. Basically during the night time the sun drops down from the sky and everything gets dark. There's still the same number of enemies and all the same crap is going on but the only difference is that for whatever reason dinosaurs fall asleep. Why did they do this? I can't even understand. The best I can tell is that the dinosaurs fall asleep just to piss you off. You have to go through this one mission and I remember going and getting a little bit lost and by the time I got to the end of the stage there was this dinosaur dude I had to talk to but he was asleep. So I was like okay I’ll use the action button to see if I can talk to him. But he wouldn't respond to me because he was asleep. So I took out my little pole that Star Fox has in this game for some reason instead of his blaster and started beating him over the head with it. And you know what that still didn't wake him up! So I sat there thinking well what am I supposed to do? Here's what you do everyone. You wait. You walk away from him and wait for like five minutes for the sun to rise and then he wakes up. That's a thing they did in the game. There's no reason to do this. It's just a huge waste of time and you think that kind of stuff wouldn't bother me but this game is all about wasting your time. Heck even the boxes in this game have life bars. The boxes have life bars! And in most games when you hit a box you hit it once and it blows up. In this game you have to hit the boxes twice and watch their health deplete. All this stuff is just built in to waste your time and the fact that a day/night cycle was used in this is absolutely insane. There was no reason this was just put in to irritate people. So the second negative is that this game has a pointless day and night cycle.

Okay everybody what's the worst thing you can do in a video game? Include a buddy system. Oh buddy systems work when it's co-op when you're playing with another friend. But not when it’s some weird AI controlled character. And you think Star Fox Adventures would be about Star Fox but no there a little dinosaur that follows you and it's stupid. I don't even know what the damn things name is and frankly I don't care. That dinosaur is one of the most irritating things I've ever had to deal with. See in the game there's these little things on the ground and he can dig them up if you tell him to. But he won't do it if he's hungry. That’s right this so called buddy gets hungry so you gotta feed him and maybe he gets bored so you have to play catch with him with a ball you find. They put this into the game. Probably because they thought it was something that was really fun and really original but it's super annoying. Some of the worst aspects of this game you'll find are interacting with dinosaurs. You're constantly having to deal with these stupid dinosaurs in a Star Fox game. I just want to shoot with my arwing but I have to walk around with a goddamn dinosaur feeding him pellets so that he can dig holes in the ground! That's unbelievable. So the third negative is that you've got a stupid buddy system.

The thing I hate the most about this game, the thing that just hurts me deep down is that this game is the last Rare game to ever be released on a Nintendo home console. Rare is one of the greatest video game developers in the history of Nintendo and possibly the video game industry as a whole. They've made amazing games like Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark, and all of these amazing games were so good that Microsoft bought them. They even released a bunch of them on the Xbox One in a collection called Rare Replay. And people loved it. Rare was iconic. But this game here is a complete letdown. Everything about it is wrong. It's not an original Rare property and because of that they didn't know what to do. They were trying to copy aspects from a game they didn't design and that whole Dinosaur Planet original game they were trying to make I guess was just supposed to be a Nintendo Zelda clone but even that didn't play out well. This game is a mark, a black spot on Rare and at least the stuff they made when they moved over to Microsoft was original in some respect. This is just unbelievably bad and I can't believe Rare had made this. So the fourth negative is that this game is the last Rare game ever released on a Nintendo home console.

Usually at the end of these episodes what I like to do is basically look back at everything I just said and tell you why you should play this game or why you shouldn't play this game. But this game is really difficult. I don't think you should play this game if you're a big fan of Star Fox because you're not going to get that gameplay. I don't think you should play this game if you're a big fan of Zelda because they put in these awkward vehicle mechanics and stuff that just doesn't really work out. This game really should only be played as a historical piece to show where Rare went after Nintendo was basically about to let them go. This is basically a moment in time where the awkward and strange is happening and one of the most key developers for Nintendo is just not going to be around for much longer so they produced this. But one thing I can't understand beyond all that is why IGN gave this game a 9 out of 10. This doesn't make any sense to me. This game even at the time wasn't that good. It wasn't as good as the Zelda games we got, it wasn't as good as the Star Fox games we got, this is essentially a mediocre experience that got a near-perfect score. With IGN giving this a 9 out of 10 every reviewer out there pretty much gave it about the same score as well. I'm confused. This game didn't deserve a 9 out of 10. If anything it's like a solid five. I'll never understand why this game is as highly reviewed as it is but I'll tell you this right now. It doesn't deserve that praise this is not a good game.

and Follow me bro

I kind of go back and forth with the Star Fox franchise. Star Fox 64 was really the only one that I truly enjoyed playing but the concept has always been right up my alley.

I've had Star Fox Adventure in my GameCube collection for years now but never really gave it a shot. Mostly due to the third person action sequences where you play on foot.

Your review doesn't inspire to much faith in it either so maybe my lack of playing it is justified but I'm still curious! I may just have to bump it up on my priority list and see for myself. :)

nice postings if you like to visit my blog because I'm new in steemit

Reasons for not getting negative reviews? I think the answer is..CAUSE NINTENDO!!!
