Battletoads: Bad Game Design

A new Battletoads was recently announced at E3 2018, but what about the original? Battletoads was an infamous classic for the NES that was difficult for perhaps the wrong reasons. Join Chris from Retro Roulette for a discussion on retro game design, to examine what worked and missed the mark in this early 90’s Rare adventure.

The original Battletoads is one game I could never beat. At least not without a cheat device.

Many of the games people associate with LJN were actually made by Rare Ltd. and just released by LJN.

In the matter, Battletoads is a great game and it is NES hard, the game is unfair at times but everything can be corrected with unlimited continues. It is unreasonable to expect players get through levels by memorization 6 and 7 levels into the game with limited number of continues.

It should address these issues. Add more check points and saving. I'm assuming there will be multiplayer co-op. Then again I assumed Shaq-fu Legend Reborn would be a fighter. Thanks for the write up.

Somebody get this guy a job at Rare. Let's hope, that at bare minimum, they leave friendly fire off this time in multiplayer mode (or at least give an option to toggle it - it could be fun to smack your friend for the novelty).

Just because you're not good at it, doesn't mean the game design is bad. I've beaten Battletoads, and I think it's a perfectly fair game. Hard, but fair.

While the game is certainly hard, fun to play, and fair most of the time, this doesn't excuse surprise death traps and required memorization coupled with a lack of continues. If you insist the game design is 100% spot-on, perhaps we could chat over some multiplayer.
