Trine 2 or Ten Hours of Joy

Recently my friends asked me if I could advise them an interesting multiplayer game. Considering the fact, that the two of them are a couple, I thought some run and gun is not an option. Rather accidentally, after several minutes of “researching”, I have found Trine 2, which I somehow haven’t noticed before.

I must admit that without knowing anything about the plot, I was already thrilled about playing this game and could not refrain from it. Moreover, it is not ok for me to advise anything without trying it myself.

It is hard to imagine how much time was spent on the visual part, because it looks extremely beautiful, especially for the game from 2011. The colors are so stunning, I even tried to lucid dream to experience everything I saw in Trine in 3D.

The quality of the music and sound effects are at the highest level. You will hear the water flowing and the thunder roaring, leaves rustling and the weapons making “natural” clanging sounds. And the soundtrack is created by the award-winning composer Ari Pulkkinen.

What can I say about the plot? It looks rather simple. Three “standard” heroes: the Wizard (Amadeus), the Knight (Pontius) and the Thief (Zoya) fight against enemies and try to solve the mysteries around artifacts. They are bound by the first one – Trine, which gives the three heroes the power to resurrect.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the story, you cannot deny that the game is captivating and somehow make you see familiar fantasy-style things from a different angle. Moreover, if you somehow get bored from playing one character you can switch between three heroes and explore their possibilities and upgrade them thanks to a skill tree. This will definitely help you to solve various puzzles. And there will be a lot of them until you unlock the 20th level. It took me around 10 hours to get there and I have never had a feeling (not even once) that I was wasting my time.

Trine 2 is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux users – the latter can also enjoy the game running smoothly. However, they should download proprietary drivers for that.

I played it on my Mac and it was a really cool experience. Although the game accidentally stopped a couple of times, it hasn’t ruined the positive impressions. Besides, I am inclined to think that the problem was created by all the unnecessary stuff I use to store on my computer until the end of times. In case you have the same problem, try speeding up your Mac or PC and it is likely to be resolved.

The game is definitely worth its price. However, you can also get it on Steam when it’s on sale. And do not forget to check out Trine 3. It is shorter than the previous parts due to financial problems developers couldn't overcome, but still offers amazing adventures.
