Late last month, China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (CMHRSS) announced that "esports professional" and "esports operator" are now both officially recognized professions.
According to the CMHRSS, an esports operator is one who works on organizing esports tournaments and other similar content, while esports professionals are those who compete in tournaments, events or train and scrimmage with pro players.
This news came roughly a month after China lifted its ban on new video games after nearly a year of keeping games from getting released. With the ban lifting, more than 80 games were pushed through for approval, however, the country's largest gaming company, Tencent (TCEHY), was forced to wait until the end of January to get 2 games approved.
China is anticipated to surpass Western Europe's esports revenues with $210.3 million in 2019, which would make it the second largest market in the world behind the United States.
