My humble opinion on the console wars

We now sit just under three years into the life of ps4 and Xbox one in this generation of home consoles. The cycle started with a flurry of hype from both sides with fanboys of each trading blows. as time has passed this has slowed some what.

As the years have gone by, the consoles have been growing in appeal more and more as both of their price points are at all all time low ( xbox one x is $499/£450 when released but considering the power is hardly over price in my opinion. This is partly because both systems have received mid-cycle upgrades in the form of PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and the now renamed xbox one x ( xbox scorpio )

At this point, most of the games that are being released are available across both consoles, however, both still have exclusive titles and a long list of existing games that will be updated later this year to run 4k or at least better on the mid gen refresh consoles. that could make one, the other or even both a more worthwhile investment depending on your priorities and finances.

The sales of the PS4 family continue to show Sony with a pretty comfortable lead, nearly doubling the amount of units sold compared to Xbox one.

Sony's comfortable lead is down to the companies model of making sure its system is packed full of an excellent exclusive games list such as spider man, Along with it's slimline and upgraded 4K models this has not been in doubt since launch

Microsoft has tried to come back strong in recent times which has narrowed the sales gap with Sony some what . Along with bringing a number of excellent exclusives of its own including the very much hyped Player unknown battle grounds the company also has its own slimline console, The Xbox One S but in my opinion the slim line consoles are just a way to make more money now the hardware for them has dropped in price since original release of the ps4 and Xbox one

Microsoft has gone a step further by equipping the One S with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, and the ability to upscale games to 4K. Then there is the Xbox one x ( project Scorpio ) which will run some games at least in native 4k once the developers learn to get the best out of it.

The company has also got big ambitions for Xbox One/Windows 10 compatibility with the Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Game Pass initiatives. It's so far not been great but has the potential to really take off in the future with them actively being a fan of cross platform which is something Sony have stated their investors do not want to see which brings me to my final point.

i feel no one can win in any console war. both will have fan boys who will bicker and argue in any community they can but both Nintendo and Microsoft have stated they would like to implement cross platform play but as previously stated Sony do not want to and from their words WONT DO IT. This i feel puts them at a disadvantage to Microsoft as it is an old way of thinking. they are behind in terms system power now with Xbox one x.

My conclusion

No console war is good or even something that can be won. Console manufactures and devs working together to create better games for the consumer is what should be the focus such as cross platform gaming and getting rid of console exclusive which is slowly happening now with timed exclusives coming in . How many of you would want to play a game with a friend but as you are both on different consoles its not possible. This surely would benefit both the consumer and the games/ console developers.
