The past few years I have felt like we have been experiencing a dry spell with rts and city building games. Nothing that great came out so we had to resort to playing older games. But there are some games in development that are looking really good with a lot of potential. It seems a few companies are starting to capitalize on the banished style of game design. Which is really exciting because banished was an awesome game.
Ostriv
http://ostrivgame.com/home/
Basically a 3d version of banished set in the 18th century. Instead of controlling each individual unit you give them things to do while they work on their own.
Depraved
http://evilbite.com/
Another game similar to banished set in the time of the wild west.
Ancient Cities
https://ancient-cities.com/
Another game like banished set in the neolithic era. This one seems to be the most in depth with a lot of great features and game mechanics as well as really good graphics. If this does well the developers plan to implement other era's into this game series.
Aven Colony

This looks a lot like planetbase. Planet base was pretty good but lacked replay value and late game. Hopefully this will be more in depth.
Spell Force 3

This is an rts/rpg style game set in a fantasy world.
Veil of Crows

http://store.steampowered.com/app/601540/Veil_of_Crows/
This is a clone of the Mount & Blade Warband campaign. The main difference being that it is rts style instead of having a third/first person viewpoint.
Surviving Mars

This also looks a lot like planetbase. You build a colony on mars in a banished style type of game.
Atomic Society

This looks like another banished clone set in a post apocalyptic setting.

This is a free open source game of ancient warfare set in the days of Rome. This is your typical rts age of empires style game. I have played this one a lot and as far as free games go it is a good one and honestly puts a lot of paid games to shame. The graphics and city building are a lot of fun but the combat could be better. The developers have addressed the fact that players have been disappointed with the gameplay and plan on making the game better. Since it is free it is definitely worth a try. This game has a ton of potential and I am looking forward to future updates.
There is SugarMill also

Looks decent especially how it makes an effort to be realistic
wow great!
Love how the footpaths in Ostriv look naturally worn. Ancient cities looks comfy as well!
