Can thank Microsoft for that, they started it with Xbox Live, everyone is just following suit as they were given the a-ok. Playstation used to be well worth it because they gave you 2-3 games a month, and easily worth $50/year as at least one of them was a $40 game you were actually looking for.
Once the PS4 came out, the quality of the games went downhill, they are mostly indie games now and not nearly as good. I still manage to get 2-3 games that make it worthwhile. We now starting to get AAA games with PS Plus for free, and now new consoles will be out in a year or two and we start the cycle again, 2-3 years of just Indie games.
I believe XBox started to give games now as well.
Some of the free games on the Xbox were good when I played on the XBOX 360 but have noticed the lack of decent games on the PS4. I play Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Warframe and Brawlhalla at the moment which are decent free to play games on the PS4 but other than that, we seemed to get screwed over.
Not alot I can do but have a whinge really becuase I will still continue to pay.
There have been some really good PS4 Plus free Games this year.

Game of Thrones
Until Dawn
Tales from Borderlands
Rocket League
War of Mine
Infamous Second Son
All these games I have purchased would purchase, or played because of PS Plus. Half of them covers membership easily.
Once new console comes out though, it will be slim pickings for some time unless it runs PS4 games.

I already love Tales Of The Borderlands, I forgot about that one.
I wont be getting the new console for ages though, Im not one of these that will just drop money on the new console right away, I ike to wait a while
