"As God of War 4 comes out today, fans will notice Sony Santa-Monica have breathed new life into the series. They have done this through the transition from Greek to Norse mythology."
I don't know if I agree that this is the whole reason, because there's been a big shift in the story with the addition of Atreus. It's moved from a story of vengeance to a much more mature story of fathers and sons and mourning a lost parent.
The original came out in 2005, and now Corey Barlog (who's directed the God of War franchise since 2006), mentioned that the birth of his own son had a major impact on the story. While a lot of my friends are raving about the Norse mythos, yes, they're also seriously invested in the Kratos' developing skill as a father. I think it's because the original came out 13 years ago and the guys who originally played it are older, and a lot of them are fathers now, too.
