The Game Awards is a load of wankery that big boys use to throw money at each other.

So, the Legend of Zelda won GotY in 2017. What a big surprise that was. The popular game wins the popular award. Do people still take awards shows seriously? The only reason to attend is to watch the new trailers so you can get hyped for shit that isn't going to be released for a whole year.

Nintendo practically owns the show. From managing to make another Bayonetta exclusive happen, to "winning" the award, they were front and center. Seeing as Bayonetta 2 is one of the best games released on Wii U, that's something great to look forward to. I'm still crossing my fingers for a Dark Souls remaster on the Switch to be announced this month.

The greatest thing that happened wasn't even during the show itself, but just on social media. The new FromSoftware teaser. That thing had my head spinning. I'm 90% certain it's going to be a Bloodborne sequel, but a new IP is even more welcome.

I will say, however, Josef Fares was absolutely amazing. He was the true highlight of the show.

I've been short on funding this year, so new gaming experiences are few and far between, but my game of the year... It has to be Super Mario Odyssey. It was a console seller for me. The world was just so full of fresh and varied ideas. It set the bar for future 3D Mario games above all of its predecessors. The best Indie game released this year was definitely Hollow Knight. I don't know how it managed to fall so far under the radar. Hand drawn animation to rival CupHead with equally crushing difficulty, plus an intricately designed interconnected world makes it truly impressive considering it was made by only two people.

Zelda was not a bad game, but it fell short on many of its promises. It does not hold up against the overall quality Mario or Hollow Knight delivered.
