Do You Miss Cartridges And Discs?

in #gaming8 years ago

You remember the days of cartridges? You would pop the old one out of the system, pop a new one in and press the power button. If it didn't work you would take it out and blow on it before putting it back in again. Then we moved on to CDs and blu-ray discs. They did not have the same feel as a cartridge but still it was something psychical that you owned. But now everything is steamed. You buy the game, download it and play it from your console or computer. It is convenient, useful when you need to redownload it and does offer some great deals but still I kind of miss the old cartridges.

There was the collecting factor. You could keep them in a case and the games themselves were like a sticker collection. Then you had the boxes and the instruction manuals which were something back in the day. The artwork was unique for each game and the instruction manual was an actual manual with weight to it. There was even a design on the cartridge itself, some which look much cooler than the game itself.

We are not going back to those days and we might even move to streaming in the near future. But still there was something about those old cartridges. Even if you had to put them in a bunch of times to get it to work :p

I'm not really one to replay a game once I've finished it. When I used to have cartridges and discs and I finished a game I would sell it. I was never one for collecting and keeping everything.

Nowadays... I buy all my games for Xbox One digitally. One negative aspect is that I can't sell the games... but the fact that I never have to switch discs again outweighs everything for me.

That is a good point, the selling back of it.

Your Nintendo switch does still use a cartridge if i'm not mistaken.

Yes, basically that's my kids console nowadays... and I plan to sell games they don't play anymore for them.

The cycle continues :p

I prefer the good ol carts. They last forever... Some I have are over 25 years old and still play great

They were meant to last.

Yes I miss them. But I'm glad too that eveything is becoming easier to download. so I don't say I hate where we are going.

They both have their advantages :)

I've always found the physicality of cartridges satisfying. There's just something about it.

The advantage of a cartridge containing eproms is that there is almost very little or no loading time for data access to compare optical media. I say almost because there are loadings especially in the principle of bankswitching.

Yep, I'd still buy new games on cartridges today gladly. I've lost a few cd games to the sands of time while my cartridges keep powering along.
