Sharing my experience, this game wouldn't be very scary if playing normal non-VR setup. But I've found that when you put on the Oculus, it really feels like you're in there. It's hard to express in words the actual feelings of dread I get when playing this game!
Some of my friends tried playing it on my Oculus, one actually fell out of the chair he got so worked up!
I'd really recommend it if you're into horror since it's so cheap.
Too many of the launch games totally relied on the "VR effect" you described. But now there are loads of games like Narcosis that are great both on monitors and in VR.
You do bring up a good point.
