I agree with you about music and atmosphere being the true reasons behind this game's success. Sometime I'd like to have a 12-string guitar just to be able to play the music of Tristram (which would also require skill, alas).
At any rate, mechanics were something of a milestone in the genre, as repetitive as they could get. Actually, in the end, I ended up with more hours of gameplay on a little Diablo clone called Ancient Evil, which included a little more puzzle solving and plot elements, although the gameplay was not as good (but there was a sleep system and a hunger system, which was kinda nice).
