Golden Axe II is the same with its predecessor which has more than one genre such as a side-scrolling/beat 'em up. This video game was developed by Sega and also released by Sega. In the previous series, it was developed for Arcade while in this series, it was aimed for Sega Genesis which was released in December 1991. Then, a new series was made for the arcade titled Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder but it's not the same video game with Golden Axe II. After launching for Sega Genesis, Sega developer team only release for Sega Mega Drive platforms. However, this video game appeared on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and iOS.

The Information Details

  • Developer: Sega AM7
  • Publisher: Sega
  • Designer: Makoto Uchida
  • Composer: Naofumi Hataya
  • Series: Golden Axe
  • Platforms: Sega Genesis and Sega Mega Drive
  • Release: North America in January 1992, Japan in December 1991, and PAL in 1992
  • Genre: Beat 'em up/a side-scrolling
  • Modes: Single-player and multiplayer

Gameplay

Golden Axe II has more than one genre such as a side-scrolling arcade-style and hack and slash. The genre is quite similar to its predecessor. The number characters are also the same. The player is offered three different characters namely Gilius Thunderhead who is an ax-wielding dwarf, Ax Battler who is a two-handed sword and a barbarian, and Tyris Flare who is a long-sword-wielding and an Amazon. Each of the warriors has their own unique special magic attacks to defeat the enemies. Then, the player gets a set of life bars which can lose when the player is hit.

Even though the gameplay and the characters are the same as the previous series, Golden Axe II has some enhancement. The first improvements are in attack. In Golden Axe, when the player presses the jump and attack buttons simultaneously, the character will perform "back attack". This type of attack has been changed to be a more powerful attack that can beat the enemies at once. The most important thing is the magic system which has been overhauled. In the first series, when the player presses the magic button, the whole magic pots will be used while in this series, the player can control how much the magic pots that will be used.

Moreover, there is two kind of the game modes that the player can choose. The first is "The Duel" mode. In this mode, the players are put in a certain arena to fight the enemies. Gradually, the level of difficulty will rise. There are multiple rounds in duel mode. The player must defeat an enemy even a group of enemy. Even though the game consists of multiple rounds, the arena is still the same. To complete the game, the player must be a winner for 15 levels.

Meanwhile, another mode is "Normal Mode" where the players defeat the various enemies in different areas. The players get award between each level. The given reward is based on the performance of the players. The storyline of Golden Axe II is in this mode. The player must free the Yuria from the evil clan that is led by Dark Guld. The player must pass several places to reach the castle of Dark Guld. The player must complete seven stages such as Ravaged Village, Ruins, Tower, Dragon's Throat Cave, Castle Gates, Caster, and Dark Guld's Chamber.

Plot

The game location is the same as the previous series which places the fictional land named Yuria which is a Conan the Barbarian-style high fantasy medieval world. After defeating Death Adder and saving the land. The people of Yuria live in peace until an evil clan comes to conquer the land once more. The leader of this clan is Dark Guld. He is even worse than that of Deat Adder. There is no one that can defeat this clan except the three brave warriors namely Gilius Thunderhead, Ax Battler, and Tyris Flare. They have to struggle to defeat Dark Guld and his clan.

Where to Play

You also can choose the warrior that you want to use for the game.

My Opinion

Have you tried to play this video game? If yes, what do you think? I also have played this video game. Now, it's time to comment the video game. The storyline of the video game is almost the same with its predecessor. The gameplay has been improved. Then, the player also can choose two game modes. The warriors can perform some attack to defeat the enemies. Another improvement is in fighting more than one enemy at once. If it's hard in the previous series, it's much easier to do that in this series. In short, I give 8.5 of 10 for this video game. I hope you enjoy reading my article and see you in the next post.

Next time, I'll review those video games

I will be waiting for it..!

I like this review, it seems that many SEGA Classics are well remembered. From your review I could see that Goldend Axe is a good game.

which has more than one genre such as a side-scrolling, beat 'em up, hack, and slash

As far as I know, every Beat 'em Up game is also a side-stcoller... I think every hack and slash game is also beat 'em up too. That's what I thought before. Are you sure they are different genres?

It seems you linked to http://www.ssega.com/golden-axe-ii, I was skeptical about the website at first then I read this.

Q: Is this legal?
A: Yes it's legal, by playing you are renting a copy of the games we own.

I like how they approached the topic.

I included this post in my Gaming Daily, you might want to check it out.

Thank you, it's such a good information. I thought that they were different.
Next time, I'll be more careful on writing an article.
