Hyacinths

The control of paint on a canvas might be less precise than a marker on a piece of paper for many. Drawing with a flexible brush means having a flexible attitude, as we do our best. A marker tip is much less flexible than a brush, and allows for more precision. When planting certain plants too, like Fosythia perhaps, the gardener might have more flexible expectations, if it is to grow unpruned. Like a brush wet with paint, it is applied without perfect expectations. For a more controlled marker effect, many historically and currently have been drawn to planting hyacinths in the garden.

Hyacinths are known for their ability to be used for geometric designs. Substantially marked and yet a making a contained statement with stature, hyacinths are known to be and have been planted in large groups, with contrasting splashing colors, and with a salt and pepper effect. So defined, they can also be planted at different intervals from each other.

How precise is a brush? It might depend on the artist’s touch. Planting hyacinths gives us a delightful feeling of control. How much control could God have if He designed a garden on the planet? Knowing the weather, or even controlling the weather, He could have the most precise brush, knowing where each future leaf and flower will unfold.
