A little bit of cleanup in the garden

in #gardening7 years ago

Hello dere, and welcome to da garden, eh!

As we get further into the fall and the plants die back, it becomes time to start cleaning up the garden. I had a bit more energy yesterday, so I started cleaning up the garden in a couple of areas. I pulled up most of the outside tomato plants and cleaned up the area around them a bit. I left the 2 best tomato plants in because they're still alive and growing.

Next, I decided to dump out my bag pot with the red potatoes in it. The plants were dead, so it was time.

I didn't get that good of a yield on this container, but I got a few potatoes. I think the bag pot probably dries out too fast to be using it for this.

I still have plants in several of the containers.

Because most of my greenhouse pictures are taken from the inside, I thought I'd share a couple of pictures of the outside of the greenhouse today.

Nothing quite like cleaning aquariums outside on a nice day...

Well, that's all I have for today, I hope you enjoyed it.

love your greenhouse. Ya that is a small potato yield. I am picking my potatoes this week. I pray for something in the ground. LOL

Thanks!
The potatoes that I planted in the ground have been doing better than the container potatoes.

Really. I am digging up my ground potatoes next week and will compare my results. Thanks

Growing potatoes in containers is actually something new for me. I've always had enough space to grow potatoes in the ground. I tried growing them in a raised bed a few years ago, but that makes them harder to dig without making a mess of the raised bed. I've tried different methods of growing them in the ground and found that, for my purposes, planting the seed potatoes shallow and then hilling them up with a hoe makes them easier to dig in the fall. I used to plant them deeper, but it's too much digging for my back now.

WOW! What a gorgeous greenhouse! I'm working on a hoop house right now but getting something more permanent like yours would be a dream. I love that you painted it to match your house too! I did that with my chicken coop ( :
It already snowed a few inches here so most of everything is a gonner in the garden except for some kale and my perennial herbs. Definitely working on getting it all cleaned up in preparation for the winter too!

What a sweet place you have, nice job getting things wrapped up for fall.

Glad you're feeling better! Looks like you had a really nice day to get back outside, too.

The potatoes will make a nice meal, so at least you got that out of the bag experiment. Any thoughts on using the bag again or what might do better with less water?

Thanks!
I don't think I'll use the bag pot again. I prefer solid pots that have good drainage. I don't want the soil to dry out too fast, but I don't want it to be muddy either. I'll try the potatoes in containers again next year and see what happens.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply!

Looks like you put in a good days work. How many potatos did you plant originally? Just curious, trying to grow some in a container myself. Don't know if I should put in some more. Have a good one! 🐓🐓

I think I planted 3 or 4 in the bag container. I got them in the containers about a month late this year, so they didn't have as much time to grow as they should have had.

I would consider that a decent yield for the amount you planted. Even if you did plant them late. Thanks for the help. 🐓🐓

Oh, I'm not complaining...too much. :-)
I had hoped they would be a little bigger is all.

I understand . I look at some of the fine bounty some people on here produce, and it is maddening to see what my little bit looks like. I try not to be to hard on myself. Just keep trying to get better at it . Sure beats the store bought. 🐓🐓

It does indeed!

Nice post @amberyooper. It is always exciting to take care of own garden.
