KafkA Shack Garden Update 4.26.2018

in #gardening7 years ago (edited)

Potatoes, cucumbers, and watermelon sprouts have now shown their faces.

I’ve also implemented a DIY method of protecting my little corn buddies using empty plastic bottles. Thanks for the tip, @nicksikorski. I always prefer to go DIY when I can.

Doesn’t look too neat, perhaps, but it does the job I think. I’ve since connected the bottle halves with poles just in case a bit of wind comes. Anyway, learning as I go, all the time.

Fuck yeah! Potatoes! Does anyone have advice on organic pest repellants to keep the bugs off of these guys?

oh, yes, gardens are really slices of heaven!
my family have our own garden too, and there's nothing more pleasant that to gather and to eat your own harvest
it's so tasty, so healthy, and so...ours:))

the idea with bottles is really cute! I'll tell it to my dad, he's our main family gardener:)

This is so great! Yes!

Neat!!! Love it man. Thanksgiving gonna be huge!!

Thanks! That is certainly the goal! Hey. We are thinking of having a BBQ on May 26th. You think you might be free?

Will be in Murakami and maybe back around 6pm-ish.

I'd love to suggest companion planting or something to help in the pest department but I know pretty much nothing about gardening, I tend to just do what I'm told out there when my partner (whose department it is) needs help with something XD But anyway I've heard it can help.

It's a nice little slice of heaven you have there :)

Congrats man, I know that represents considerable effort.
Wish I had more advice on pests and potatoes. At my location pest typically aren't a problem, I have no idea what might show up at your garden.

Potatoes are a member of the night shade and have some pretty nasty toxins in their leaves. I suppose that's why I don't see many pests on the ones I've grown.

If you have some kind of bugs under the ground they may try to chew into the potatoes. Not, saying it will happen, but there is that possibility.

Thanks. Yeah, it is a fun effort, though.

Is that right? That makes a lot of sense for some reason. The deep green color just looks serious. I'll be sure not to smoke any of the leaves, either. Lol.

Yeah, I was concerned about bugs in the ground but am not really sure what steps can be taken to keep them out of the taters.

There is a surprising amount of garden plants that are night shades, even tomatoes. It is important to let the potatoes fully 'ripen' before using. The green ones will continue to hold mild amount of the night shade toxins.

Very interesting. I feel like someone had told me that at some point. I knew there was some sort of risk there. Thanks man. Much obliged.
