@maninayton - My Carrion Smelling Flowers

in #gardening7 years ago

At this time of year, I walk into my solar dome to be met with the smell of rotten meat and the buzzing of flies.

image1

The cause of all this smelliness is my Stapelia grandifora whose common names are carrion plant or starfish flower.

The plant does this to attract the flies as pollinators.

image2

The carrion plant has tall column foliage that is covered with very fine hairs and feels soft to the touch.

If you're wondering what the white dandelion seed like things are they are actually the seeds of this plant. They are encased long seed pod which dries out and eventually splits allowing the seed to be blown away. The dried remains of the seed pod can be seen at the top of this picture.

Love the post :)

Thank you @taraanun77. Yes, it does look strange, doesn't it? Strange but also beautiful. It is worth putting up with the smell!
