The Sweet Potato Surprise

Hi,

It's been a long time since I've written anything here. But this week I was surprised by a little plant in my kitchen.

For many years I have tried to grow sweet potatoes myself at the end of January, while there is still frost outside. However, it has never worked. I tried all the different methods I could find on the internet. Be it whole potatoes or only pieces completely in the soil or only partially. Or the whole experiment without soil in a glass of water. Nothing worked. Perhaps the potatoes had been stored for too long or treated despite the organic label.

In any case, I had actually already given up on sweet potatoes. But then nature took matters into its own hands. We had bought one potato too many for cooking and thought we would add it to another dish later. As a result, the sweet potato was left on the windowsill for two weeks and one morning I was surprised.

The sweet potato has now been given a sunnier spot

I discovered little purple eyes on one side and didn't really want to believe it yet. Instead of using the sweet potato, I gave it a chance and now, almost two weeks later, two sprouts are already looking good and a few more might come out in the next few days.

I'm very excited to see what happens over the next few weeks and whether the shoots continue to grow diligently. If they make it, I will try to separate them when they reach a length of 15 cm and turn them into slips.

By then, I may already have other plans for the garden that I can report on. Wish me luck that the sprouts continue to thrive!

Excellent, good luck with the rest of the process :)

Good luck - I hope your sweet potato continues to thrive and send out more shoots. It would be great if you can actually grow your own sweet potatoes from the slips.
I tried it a few years ago but started a bit too late. During the winter I place the pot inside - it was a beautiful plant. It became quite large - so I checked and found many small potatoes. The pot was too small so I abandoned the project. I will try it again this year.

I wish you good luck as well! I'm happy to use a part of my mother in laws garden. But since I'm there just one or two times per month, I have to focus on plants that can survive several weeks without me. 😅
