RE: Certified Organic: What's Behind the Label? Is It Good for Small Farms or Consumers? (DTube Daily Vlog)

in #gardening7 years ago

It's absolutely insane the amount of papers and work they have organic growers go through in order to get certified. But farmers who spray toxic crap on a daily basis don't have to show for anything. It's a world upside down if you ask me! I know a local organic farm here and they have to jump through the craziest hoops to keep their cert each year. Last year he had a problem with his water. He was taking water from a spring and had never had any issues till then. Turned out that the water got polluted by planes dumping fuel. So now he had to install water filters and I don't know what else to fulfil the demands. It almost cost him his business....They can't employ others because they simply have no money for it so they depend on volunteers. This causes its own set of issues when volunteers decide to pick up and leave sooner than agreed. I completely understand why you wouldn't want to go through all that crap. I think it's much better to build relationships with farmers that you trust. I used to get some of our vegetables from a couple who were growing organically but never had the time or money to get certified. I hope people can get back to building relationships with others built on trust again, then maybe we wouldn't all need these certificates for anything.
