THREE SISTERS ROCK MOUND GARDENING

in #gardening8 years ago (edited)

This beautiful Three Sisters Garden was the result of a community effort between friends. All materials were freely shared without cost (with the exception of transportation for the rocks and soil). The corn is a mixture of heirloom varieties that has been seed saved for a few years, cross bred to yield colourful and edible in a climate that normally will not grow corn very well (other than GMO types). The squash is called Winter Keeper, originally obtained from a seed swapping event. The beans are a mixture of Calypso (also known as Yin Yang Bean), and the old Cherokee Trail of Tears variety.

This was our first attempt at rock mound gardening, and quite successful.
Four squash plants produced close to 200lb of large melons.

The corn produced too many foot long cobs to bother counting, and in a rainbow of colours, each was a surprise to open. The beans, sadly, were crowded for sunlight but are still ripening.

Next year will be even better!
