Cactus Update: Now they're three.

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)
It's been a while since I posted anything about my cactus, truth is that is has been really interesenting lately. When I look at the photos I made to them initially, I realize they have grown a lot. Ling Ling hasn't flowered anymore (probably because of the lack of sun) and Cacnea refuses to grow straight.

Here you can see the last update.

Oh yes, that's right.. They're three now! I didn't get another one, it just came out of Cacnea. Remember the lump it was growing on a side? It almost fell off, so I decided to cut it and plant it. I named the sprout Chiqui, spanish short for small.

It's worth saying that I began to take care of them since day one with the hope of remembering that by cultivating a garden, we undeniably cultivate ourselves. Talking to them, spraying water to them, just looking at them is therapeutic. With a lot of power, comes a big responsability.

He's definitely refusing to grow straight, no matter what I do.. So I just gave up and let him grow like that. I've tried turning him against light, putting a stick on his side, even putted some rocks, but nothing. He has been growing some ridiculous long spines too! I believe he's okay, since he gave me a little sprout. It was a small lump at the beggining, it started growing a lot, but I realized it was starting to "stay into the ground" and the part where it was connected with Cacnea was really thin.. So I cut it and planted in the old tiny pot where Ling Ling was.

Here's Lil' Chiqui, I hope he sticks to the pot and grows a strong root.

Now talking about Ling Ling, I decided to change the pot for two reasons: First of all, she was getting to big for it, she almost reached the edges of her pot (I thought that was a clear sign) and the second one it's way too ridiculous.. She fell from the table and got hurt and out of her pot. You're probably wondering how did that happen, well it's an unbelievable story: I live in a 4th floor and the cactus are setted next to a window so they can get much light as I can offer and a couple of days ago A BALL CAME OUT OF NOWHERE AND KNOCKED HER DOWN. Yup, a ball got to the 4th floor, I don't even believe it myself.. Already passed the resignation part and put some hands into the issue. She fell and hurted, one side of her is all sunken; which means that my level of worriness is at its highest point.

You can see the part that is sunken :(

She also grew lumps!!

This is where she got hurted.

All I can do is hope she gets better, I really do. She's taller, her hair is messier than ever and even has lumps! Even thought she didn't flower anymore, I thought she was doing fine until the incident. When she fell off I almost wanted to die, how could I let that happen? All I did after freaking out was get another pot (quite awfull) and plant her. I don't even know ir I did it correctly, but all I hope is she gets better.

Most cacti has scars from hurts Lady Vanessa as their flesh is very soft. But they normally self-seal the wound and continue growing! Great to see that your collection is growing! Blessings!

I'm so glad to hear that. It's a relief!!

Sorry to hear about Ling-Ling, I'm sure she will be fine. The lumps are offsets, a.k.a babies. Cacti like that never grow singly, they always make lots of offsets until they form a big clump. I don't think that the falling damage is serious, just remember that a larger pot will take longer to dry out and be careful not to overwater and cause rot.
Likewise, Cacnea also likes to grow in clumps and that's why there's a new offset and it is normal for the stalk attaching them to the parent plant to be very thin. Just remember that they need to dry out for a week or two after you cut them and be careful not to overwater while they are rooting. It takes a long time.
I must say that all of them look like they need a little more direct sunlight if possible

The sun linght worries the heck out of me :( i'm about to take them for a walk like dogs.

Ling Ling is so pretty :3 looks like a pine. I hope she gets better!

I also bought a plant when I moved out from my mother's house, and now there are a lot at my place hah I agree with you that they're therapeutic. I especially love cactus and succulents. ♥
