C2E2 and Geeks Doing Good Deeds

in #geek10 days ago

Yesterday I shared some of my non-Star Wars (yes there are other things in the world besides Star Wars) pictures from C2E2. In this post I'd like to not only share my Star Wars pics but also highlight an amazing organization called The 501st Legion.

You can tell by the framing and high quality that this is not one of my photos. This is one shared from the official Mandalorean show on Disney+

In Star Wars lore, The 501st is Darth Vader's elite Stormtrooper legion, nicknamed "Vader's Fist". But in our galaxy, the 501st Legion is "... is an international costuming organization dedicated to celebrating STAR WARS™ through the creation and use of quality costumes that portray the villainous, morally ambiguous, or non-partisan characters from the STAR WARS™ universe. The Legion promotes interest in STAR WARS and facilitates the use of these costumes for STAR WARS-related events as well as contributes to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work ..." (From the 501st Legion Charter)

But that description does not do it justice. The 501st has become a legion of joy. They visit children's hospitals like St. Jude's and Ronald McDonald House to brighten the day of kids and families going through incredibly tough times. They have been part of The Make a Wish Foundation's wish granting missions. They raise money for countless charity organizations including those for Autism research, March of Dimes, Alzheimer research, Breast Cancer research, Down Syndrome research and The Relay for Life. They are staunch advocates for libraries (something we really need right now) as well as The Special Olympics.

As a reward for all of their hard work, many members were called into action for the last episode of season 1 of The Mandalorean. Now all of those members can say their costumes are part of Star Wars canon.

Now on to my Geekspolision!!!!!!!! Star Wars edition.

This life size Jawa also came with a communicator which changed its voice. Utinni!!!!! He offered to trade some trinkets for a member of my family. My wife made me turn him down.

Not only is that Wookie almost 7 feet tall, he also had a device that allowed him to make perfect Wookie growls. Darth Vader's perfect costume involved a similar device to perfectly replicate Vader's voice and breathing.

Jeffrey Brown, who authored and drew some of my children's favorite books when they were kids including: Darth Vader and Son, Vader's Little Princess, and Goodnight Darth Vader led a story hour for some of the Padawans at the show. And yes, me and my 18 year old daughter watched the entire thing (from just outside the kids area). After it was over I got to personally thank him for helping to create so many awesome memories with my kids.

"Bad guys doing good" sums up this group perfectly. I did make a donation using that QR code.

These were the droids I was looking for.

Here's the interactive part. What is your favorite charity organization?

This sounds like a great day out. I've heard a lot about the 501st legion and all the great work they do, absolute legends, and it's great they got some good recognition and were able to get on the screen.

Certainly new appreciation while replaying the Battlefront 2 campaign for the millionth time.
