End of an Era - Maltby Pit - Monomad

in #gems5 years ago

Maltby Colliery, South Yorkshire Uk. It had been mining coal and been the centre of the local community since 1910.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltby_Main_Colliery

However, in 2013, the pit closed - long after many others in the local area.

In its 103 years, it had seen its fair share of death, with underground explosions and accidents during building.

There was plenty of coal down there to mine, but awkward conditions underground meant that it wasn't cost effective in this day and age to mine it safely, especially when we are now looking at more eco-freindly ways of creating energy.

Over 500 jobs were lost in an already underprivilaged area of South Yorkshire.

Here's my very amateur take of the cememony to mark the pit's closure.

I dont claim for them to be any good.

Quite a melancholic post mate; great documentary images, I remember miners fighting with the coppers running around the streets where I lived in Worksop as a kid...

and coppers fighting with the miners...

I remember it quite vividly, albeit i was only young at the time..

I used to spend a lot of time at my grans at Kilnhurst, always remember graffiti on the railway wall of so and so is a scab.... it stayed there for years!!

These are great images mate. Photography isn't just about pretty pictures, it is also about recording events and capturing the emotions involved in them. And if that was your aim then these images are spot on.
