I took it to mean "in the commands or our children lies love" or something like that. A better replacement would be "In all our lives command" no?
I never remembered the words anyway. And what are they going to do with the French version of the song? In French, the minute there is one man, even if the majority is female, the masculine takes precedence on the ending of words. So "They" that would comprise only women, would be "elles", add just one man, it becomes "ils". Are they going to start making gender neutral changes there too? I'm all for rights and freedoms, but not when it restricts and controls the freedom of speech of others.
This change in the National Anthem is ridiculous. I respect the LGBTQ community AF, but a National Anthem which was written hundreds of years ago is a piece of heritage.
So okay, they want to change it fine. BUT the MINUTE they start changing the words of SHAKESPEARE's plays... Something written hundreds of years ago should not be altered, unless spoofed, parodied, analysed, anything that enters fair use type of thing.
Whoever wrote the National Anthem should be rolling in his grave going "Where are my Copyright laws? I protest!"
It was written in 1880 in French then 1908 someone translated to english. It didn't become our official Anthem until 1980, when it replaced God save the queen.
As far as making it gender neutral? No ducks given because most of that line gets mumbled anyways, "In all thy..garbled..mand.
If you've ever done a Shakespeare play, you'll know they chop them apart, rewrite lines, throw out overtly racist dated dialogue.
For the performance, but they don't rewrite it and print the newly rewritten versions. That's what I was referring to.
As it should be with the anthem, left to personal preference without a need to rewrite the original script.
Agreed!
