Geraniums are a very popular and somewhat old-fashioned plant, although there are many newer varieties available today. They grow naturally in Temperate regions of the World, and come in many varieties and colours. There are trailing Geraniums suitable for garden borders or hanging baskets, taller upright Geraniums, Geraniums with scented leaves which contain aromatic oils- they are a delight to smell when you rub or crush the leaves, some with a Rose scent, some with a Peppermint scent, some with a lemon scent, and many more. Other varieties have variegated leaves ( green and white on the same leaf ). There are single and double flowered varieties. They have relatively few pests and diseases, and will grow in most types of soil, as long as the roots don't get waterlogged. Grow them in full sun for best flowering. I took these photos in my locality in Sydney.

The typical cup-shaped flowers come in shades of pink, magenta and white. Geranium sanguineum has one of the best bloom displays of all the geraniums. The flowers can completely hide the foliage and repeat bloom can be expected. Geranium sanguineum spreads less quickly than Geranium endressii and really requires little to no care.

True Blue Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' - Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' was the first of the brilliant blue geraniums to catch gardeners' eyes. The Royal Horticultural Society gave it the Award of Garden Merit (AGM). The blue of its flowers is hard to photograph and is always more startling when you actually see the plant. The flower stalks can grow quite tall and will droop under the weight of the blossoms. Most gardeners don't bother to stake them, since it is still an attractive plant, even with its floppy habit.

Geranium 'Double Jewel' - Geranium 'Double Jewel' is a compact geranium with a more upright growing habit than you usually see in hardy geraniums. Growing a mere 10" in height, a single plant can easily fill an 8-10 inch pot and be perfectly happy growing there.

Geranium 'Southcombe Double' -Geranium 'Southcombe Double' has pure pink, fluffy double blossoms that don't look like geraniums, at first glance. But it's every bit has hardy and easy going as its geranium cousins and has the bonus of blooming almost non-stop throughout the summer, into fall.

Wikipedia tells me that there are 422 types of Geraniums. They are mostly found at Eastern Medditeraneum region. It would grown in any soil as long it is waterlogged. So it is no surprise it grows in yours Australia.
Have you know that English word Cranesbill comes from their shape that reminds on fruit capsule on some if their species.
One of the species of it Sticky geranium is protocarnivorous so it is feed by meat.

The plants that we commonly call geraniums were introduced in Europe by Dutch traders who brought them from South Africa in the early 18th century. Because these new plants resembled the hardy wild geraniums already growing in Europe, botanists mistakenly grouped them together. Geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum) make popular bedding plants in the garden, but they’re also commonly grown indoors or outside in hanging baskets. Growing geranium plants is easy as long as you can give them what they need.
How to Grow Geraniums Depending on where or how you grow geranium plants, their needs will be somewhat different. Indoors, geraniums need lots of light for blooming but will tolerate moderate light conditions.
They also need indoor temps of around 65-70 degrees F. (18-21 C.) during the day and 55 degrees F. (13 C.) at night. These plants need to be grown in well-draining potting soil as well. When growing geraniums outdoors, they require moist, well-draining soil similar to that of indoor potting soil with equal amounts of soil, peat and perlite. Locate your geraniums in an area with at least six to eight hours of sunlight. Since these plants must be protected from cold, wait until the threat of frost has passed before planting. Space plants about 8 to 12 inches apart and around the same depth as their original planting pots.
Mulching the plants is also recommended to help retain moisture.

The flower colour ranges through strong or subtle shades of violets, blues, pinks, magenta and white, and many have attractive veining in a contrasting stronger colour. Many varieties flower for months on end throughout summer and well into autumn, and some start flowering as early as late spring. The flowers are generally quite small, but produced in huge abundance to almost cover the plants when in full bloom.
The hand-like foliage of many varieties is also highly attractive in its own right, producing various quilting, veining, and colour blotching. And, as many of the commonly grown varieties are low growing, their dense carpet-like foliage makes them good ground cover plants.
They are cold and frost hardy, so shouldn’t be confused with the very closely related pelargoniums, which aren’t and are used mainly as summer bedding plants.

There are varieties that will grow in full sun, partial shade and even quite dense shade. This is so true that geraniums are somwhow old fashioned plants with a memorable history. These are still common in our native region accross the border line with neighbouring country. In my childhood i heard a story about geraniums own dragons and snake idk whether it is true or wrong but one thing is for sure they attract human's eye ;-)

Since you have used it, you must be knowing about its plants too. I have two plants in one pot, and only one seems to produce flowers. The other one never has bloomed. I would like to transplant them this spring as they are outgrowing the pot. Should I keep them together, or can I safely separate them? I'm worried that the non-flowering plant will never produce a bloom. My question is "Are there male and female geranium plants? Does one need the other to bloom?"
Hey buddy, the answer is no, there are not male and female plants. In a lot of plants that are grown from seed, there are cases where a plant will not flower, and this can be due to genetic variation. It is a bit like humans...two parents give birth to a son, who has totally differnt characteristics from the parents, and it confuses them, this is a bit like growing from seed, except it was sperm instead. Persist with the non-flowering plant for a while, and if still no joy, then try another plant instead that you know will flower, such as one you buy that is flowering already.
There are some beautiful flowers but not always flavorful and fragrant geranium flower is very beautiful and has a scent that gives the mind calm and comfortable. but unfortunately his flower geranium is not growing in my country.
