Tens of thousands of people are now making the move to Berlin from all parts of the world every year.

Berlin is a city I know well. I also made the move there. Berlin is Europe’s most exciting and most happening city right now. It’s got a young, dynamic and cool population and there’s a great social scene with loads going on.

Especially for creative people and digital nomads, Berlin right now has plenty of startups and opportunities to network with other entrepreneurs.

Yet moving to Berlin and getting established there isn’t so easy in practice. I know because I did it once myself. Many things in Berlin are different to other countries. It takes time and know-how to find your way when you’re new to the city.

But there’s one single thing above all that will give you a BIG advantage over other newcomers to Berlin and help you enormously in making your move to Berlin a great success.

That’s learning to speak German.

Many Berliners have a little knowledge of English, but they don’t tend to be able or even ready to speak it quite like in cities like for example Amsterdam or Copenhagen. Newcomers to Berlin are often surprised how little English is actually spoken by Berliners in everyday situations.

But when you can speak German, you instantly have a definite advantage over the other newcomers - and you’ll get much more out of Berlin and the time you spend there.

Being able to speak and understand German means you can order in a restaurant, converse easily with German people, understand German TV and media. You’ll be able to read German newspapers magazines and books, as well as socialize in German and make new friends. Suddenly a whole new world opens up for you.

Speaking German also makes handling the German bureaucracy a great deal easier.

And not only that, but being able to speak and understand German helps with looking for an apartment in Berlin’s highly competitive housing market. Not to mention finding employment or if you’re conducting business negotiations with German companies.

Some people think German is hard to learn. But despite what people sometimes assume, German is fairly easy to learn – particularly for English-speakers.

This is because German is related to English which means you enjoy an automatic advantage. For example, here are some German words that will already be familiar to you:

haus, garten, brot, frau, mutter, vater, fussball, bier, warm, haus, wasser, kalt, heiss, auto, kindergarten, zigarette.

And although German is renown for its long words, these are only long because the convention in German is to write a noun which denotes one object all joined together. All you need to do to understand what it means is to break down the individual parts of the word into their separate components.

As an example, here’s the German word for central station: Hauptbahnhof. It’s derived from Haupt – which means main, and Bahnhof – station. As it’s referring to one single item – central station, the words are simply written together, rather than as two separate ones.

German grammar can seem complex at first. After all, there are 3 “genders” for nouns in German – masculine, feminine and neuter. But in practice, there are standard rules which determine which noun gender a word takes. So it’s not that difficult in practice.

Another advantage is that German is spoken just like it’s written. So it’s much easier to pronounce and to write than say French or English.

One of the best ways to learn German quickly is to use a self-study audio course like GermanPod. GermanPod is the quickest and most effective way of learning German that you can find.

GermanPod is a digital audio-based language course that you can use on your tablet, smartphone and laptop. The lessons are short and easy to follow – and they teach you the language you actually need for modern everyday life.

Too many textbooks teach out of date material that you rarely even need in real life. But with GermanPod you’re learning the real everyday language German people themselves speak in practical everyday situations.

GermanPod is fast, up-to-date, fun and enjoyable. And you’ll get results quickly.

I too learned German using the self-study audio method. I can confirm it really works and it was by far the best investment I ever made to prepare me for my move to Berlin.

GermanPod is provided on a monthly subscription basis. In other words, it’s “pay as you go”.

This is a great idea because unlike some other German courses, it means you don’t have to part with a large sum of money up front. And you can use as much or as little of it as you wish – and according to your own budget.

GermanPod is probably the best investment you can make to ensure the success of your move to Berlin.
