Back to the Future: Still my favorite

I would be sincerely surprised if there is anyone out there over the age of 30 that hasn't already seen this film. Even if you are under 30 I would still find it a little hard to believe. I have seen this movie hundreds of times, can quote the characters at really any point in the film but I still enjoy watching it every time. Why is that?

Reasons I still love the film:

  • Fond memories: every single time i was sick (or pretending to be sick so i could stay home from school) I would pop this VHS cassette in the player and lie down on the sofa. We didn't have a huge variety of films so I think it was either this, Raiders of the Lost Arc and Conan the Barbarian. Those are all great films but I enjoyed BTTF the best.
  • The DeLorean is a seriously cool car. I had never seen a car with doors that opened like that before. I think it is an incredibly impractical vehicle and as it turns out the Delorean is actually a piece of crap car and that is why the company didn't last very long. I am sure they sold quite a few of them because of this movie though. Every now and then someone has one as a collectors piece and I am always a little bit angry with them if they don't install a flex capacitor.

  • The story is really good. Of course it is an American film so you know right at the beginning that the good guys are going to win, but the sequence where Marty is watching his family members disappear on the photos is pretty intense. In case you had forgotten it isn't entirely up to Marty to save the day and he needs his father to "man up" on the dance floor to secure the future.

this was crazy creepy to a kid in the 80's

  • Marty was a seriously cool character: I always suspected that Michael J. Fox was actually much older than the character "Marty" but he pulled it off well. He is a bit of an outsider, does really cool things like skateboards to school by hanging on the bumpers of cars, plays guitar, has a scientist pal who gives him access to an enormous amplifier for some reason, and his girlfriend is hot.
I think everyone wanted to be Marty in the 80's.

  • The film had a kick-ass soundtrack: I know Huey Louis and the News isn't exactly classic rock or anything but he was kind of a big deal in the 80's. If I hear "The Power of Love" today, i still like it. I competed in several lip-syncing contest with this song and lost all of them.

  • The "Johnny B Goode" performance is pretty wild. It is a little irritating that it is obvious that Michael J. Fox isn't singing because the vocals sound nothing like his voice. However the performance is funny and exciting because no one at that point in time had ever heard rock and roll.

This trailer doesn't do the film justice but it's the only one I could find.

The film came out in 1985 and i guess i was just the right age to appreciate this, but here we are more than 30 years later and I still find that the film stands the test of time. It ended up making nearly 400 million dollars which in today's money is 876 million (I made that up). 56 million Americans went to see the movie in theaters (I did not make this up.)

Do you have fond memories of this movie? Do you agree it is one of the best of the 80's. Do you think i am an idiot for having it be my favorite of all time?

Hey @gooddream

You've picked a cracking movie for me. I too was the right age for this movie and have always considered it one of the most teenage cool movies ever. I actually own this movie on VHS, DVD, MP4 and Blu Ray and have the box set special edition.

Any time I hear this sound it takes me right back to 85!

Another fun fact was that MJF was the first choice but they didn't get him and went with Eric Stoltz instead.

He wasn't working out and eventually MJF had a schedule rearrange so they fired Stoltz and MJF was able to start filming during evenings. Legend has it that there is a frame of Stoltz that still remains in the movie!

Thanks for posting this and making me nostalgic.

i had forgotten about the Stoltz info. yeah, apparently he was pretty bad too. I wonder if footage exists of that. great reply pal!

Thanks.

I've found a piece on it as well.

The pic is from this source

So Thomas F Wilson (Biff) claims that they never re shot this scene so it must be Stoltz. How cool is that!

I wonder if it was a classy little nod to Stoltz's efforts before they let him go.

Back To The Future is such an inventive and exciting piece of filmmaking that it is impossible to forget about it. The casting of every character involved was absolutely perfect, and the performances were spectacular. I first saw this film when I was six years old, and it is the only movie that I know of that I don't think I could ever get sick of.

One of the best things about Back To The Future is that it really makes you think. You can have in-depth conversations about the plausibility of the story-line and spend hours discussing the film. The story is awesome, it is delivered cleverly and entertainingly, and the movie as a whole is just so much FUN that it can be forgiven whatever number of time-travel discrepancies that may be found in the plot.

I cannot recommend this movie enough. I have never found a movie other than this one that provides such a huge dose of great fun, and it has the desirable quality where you are able to see something new each time you see it. The only problem is that they stopped at part III.

I'm not a big Back to the future fan. But yeah, The DeLorean was realy cool!

Whao, its one of my favorites too, Michael J fox really tried in the movie. They aimed at depicting how the future would look and they tried on some counts like the hover board and self tiring shoes because we have them now. I think the movie has part 2. Also try watching Scrooge its nice too

The film you are referring to is Back to the Future part II . Fun Fact: The actor who played Marty's Dad is actually a different person in part 2 because of a contract dispute that resulted in him being blacklisted in Hollywood for the most part.

back to future,, its owesome mobiz.all script abd seen superb

It's an amazing story, it creat more rooms for better reasoinng...

Oh I love this trilogy since I was a kid. The DeLorean, the hoverboard, the train (time machine), the music, the fact that the three movies show the lightning scene from the first film, the end of the first movie with the DeLorean flying, do's speeches about paradoxes hahahaha. The list of things i love about this franchise is huge. It was also very funny and special when we hit the 2015 date a few years ago.

Ahhhh !!! We share the same feeling. This movie is really very good and I think in this era it still is. I have beautiful memories because I always saw her with my brothers. I loved the car and I agree with you that the fact of disappearing was crazy, it was very creative and fun.
